UPDATED: Shave money off your grocery bill using Ibotta app

UPDATE: Since I first wrote about Ibotta last November, the app has made big changes worthy of an update. Once exclusive to the iPhone, Ibotta is now available to Android users. And once limited to Target, Walmart and Walgreens, Ibotta users can now cash in at dozens of more retailers. In the Triangle, you're now also able to use Ibotta at CVS, Rite Aid, Kroger and the store I'm most excited about: Harris Teeter. And remember, the coolest feature of Ibotta is that you can use its digital coupons along with paper coupons to save even more.

If you want to trim your grocery budget, but don't have the time or inclination to clip coupons, you're in luck. There's now an app for that.

Called Ibotta, the iPhone app is aimed at tech-savvy bargain hunters looking to save a little cash on their supermarket purchases.

Instead of clipping paper coupons, Ibotta users collect their discounts by playing with their smartphones.

So far, three of the biggest American retailers have signed on to allow their customers to use Ibotta: Target, Walgreens and Walmart.

The discounts are similar to paper coupons -- 25 cents here and 75 cents there.

But instead of using a scissors to clip....

Earn a little extra cash with Jingit

If you shop at Walmart and have a smartphone, you might want to give Jingit a try.

Instead of spending money, you can walk out of the store making money after scanning a few barcodes and taking mini surveys using the Jingit smartphone app.

You won't get rich using Jingit, but it will give you a little cash for extras that don't normally fit in your budget.

Or as Chris Ohlsen, a vice president at Jingit, told me: "You're not going to be paying your mortgage...but a lot of people look at it as fun money."

Jingit has a $15 per week cap on earnings right now, but a quick Internet search showed most Jingit users report earning about $5 per week.

SavingStar: Coupon savings without the clipping

Hey couponers, there's another new way to save money - no additional clipping required.

Launched nationwide in May, SavingStar offers monthly coupons that you can link to your grocery and drugstore cards through its website. Click here to join.

SavingStar coupons differ from traditional coupons in two major ways: they're paperless and they are NOT automatically deducted from your grocery order.

Triple screen smart phone design flips out | Gallery

Gallery: Triple screen smart phone

The triple screen Android 'Flip phone' is a concept with three Super AMOLED touchscreens protected by Gorilla Glass that fold into several configurations.

Kyocera's double display smart phone recently unveiled was met with mixed criticism mostly for the gap between the two displays. Can designers and manufacturers implement multiple screens successfully? We think this design is on to an intriguing start.

The device was conceived by Kristian Ulrich Larsen, Ewa Sendecka, Jeppe Vestergard and Victoria Kusk. The design was developed further by Larsen as part of his MA program at Kolding school of design.

On the jump see the embeded video of how Ulrich envisions Android on his triple display beauty.

Cancer detection possible with smart phone device

There has been plenty of buzz over whether or not cell phones cause cancer, but now there is a way for smart phones to detect cancer.

Harvard Medical researchers say their prototype smart phone accessory can take and test tiny tissue samples for cancer signs in under an hour.

The device has logged a 96 percent accuracy rate in detection tests. the results have been published by Science Translational Medicine.

Though not ready for prime time, the technology could become in cancer treatment as a less invasive detection tool to analyze patient tissue more frequently.

IEEE Spectrum has an indepth report on the research.

Verizon confirms tiered plans for summer

Customers of Verizon Wireless can expect tiered pricing for wireless data plans to be introduced this summer.

GigaOM reports that during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference on Tuesday, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said the carrier is piecing together the details, but pricing could be based on speed, data usage and maybe even both. Shammo said the current unlimited plan would be end.

The carrier's unlimited data plan has been a selling point since AT&T ditched its unlimited plan for tiered data plan pricing last summer.

As its LTE network matures, Verizon could offer the 4G technology as a premium service over its 3G EVDO network.

Review: HTC Inspire with AT&T

AT&T does not need an iPhone fighter, but it wants to broaden its line up with a variety of compelling devices for consumers who want choices.  The HTC Inspire comes early in a year that may be AT&T's greatest product stream so far.

The smart phone can go toe-to-toe with the iPhone and even trumps the iPhone 4 in some categories. Take a look a the vitals.

    * 4G (HSPA+)
    * Android 2.2 platform with built-in Adobe Flash Player support
    * Next-generation HTC Sense platform with cloud services
    * 4.3" LCD capacitive display
    * 1 GHz Snapdragon processor with 4GB internal memory
      and microSD slot with 8GB card included
    * Mobile Hotspot support
    * 8MP camera with 720p HD video recording
    * $99 with a 2 year contract

Every one of those lines out-specs the iPhone 4 in some way.

While Android is comparable to Apple's iOS, not everyone is going to prefer it. HTC's sense continues to evolve making Android even better. Included with Sense are HTCSense.com services like call forwarding, phone location, and security management.

The camera sensor out duels the iPhone in megapixels, but the Inspire's images seemed to need a bit more tweaking to my eyes.

No problem. The large 4.3" screen is HUGE compared to the iPhone. Tough Apple's phone has the Retina display which renders images and text beautifully even at with the smaller real estate, but as a media oriented device 4.3" is emerging as the screen to have. It makes for better browsing, a richer media experience and GPS navigation much easier to follow.

Speaking of GPS, I still love Android's free turn by turn navigation ...functionality that I ponied up $30 to buy RoadMate for on my iPhone.

There is a slick Facebook stream for social hounds, but don't look for a front facing camera…not there.

Light to moderate users should get through the day without charge, but gamers and heavy users might need to keep the charging cable handy.

Ready to try 4G over the HSPA+ network? AT&T says its has seen speeds as high as 6MBPS. Using the Ookla's speedtest app, I never saw download speeds more than 3MBPS and over 2MBPS was rare. Usually speeds were more in line with solid 3G performance, between 1.0 and 1.5MBPS.

Even so, browsing was fast and I doubt anyone except the most data demanding users would really be unsatisfied with the speeds. Nonetheless, I've queried AT&T about the data speeds providing the results of my Ookla tests.

The spec sheet and price may lean in the Inspire's favor compared to the iPhone so it will not be an obvious choice for everyone …and that is good sign.
