Streets at Southpoint to house 5 new tenants

Soon Chipotle-lovers will no longer have to leave the Streets at Southpoint in search of their burritos.

The shopping center will welcome Chipotle Mexican Grill this year, along with four other retailers as it gears up to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. Karen Warrick, a spokeswoman for the shopping center, said customers will begin to see construction barricades in March.

Here's a full list of the stores expected to open:

Chipotle Mexican Grill, a fast-food style Mexican eatery with a fresh twist, is taking the place of Mitchell's Hair Styling in the lower-level. Mitchell's will relocate.

Lululemon Athletica, a maker of yoga-inspired athletic apparel, will open in the Main Street section of the shopping center.

Zumiez, a retailer of action sports-related apparel, footwear, equipment and accessories, will fill a vacant space in the upper-level JC Penney wing.

Frozia, a frozen yogurt shop, is having a space constructed in the lower-level Sears wing.

Charley's Grilled Subs, a restaurant that offers made-to-order deli subs, is filling a vacant space in the food court.

The Streets at Southpoint plans to build more than 15 new stores and  remodel 30 existing stores in conjunction with the anniversary.

Cary's REI location to expand in former Borders space

Cary's paddling, cycling and running enthusiasts can revel in increased REI gear selection when the outdoor equipment retailer relocates to Devonshire Place shopping center from Crossroads Plaza in the spring.

REI will move into a 27,000 square foot space left vacant by Borders after the bookseller filed for bankruptcy in February.

With about 6,000 square feet in additional space at its new location, REI plans to add a new community space for more classes and presentations as well as expand product assortment in paddling, cycling and footwear, said REI spokeswoman Bethany Hawley.

Hawley said REI leadership had been looking to expand the Cary presence for some time. She could not comment on terms of the lease, which was announced on Nov .4.

The Walnut Street shopping center is operated by Brixmor Property Group. Other tenants include Dollar Tree, Golf Galaxy, Lifestyle Family Fitness and Monkey Joe's.

Hoping those too-big clothes become a tax benefit

Teri Boggess, former N&O sports copy editor, writes:

Losing weight will get me a tax deduction.

Well, not directly, but close enough.

Shrinking my waistline has resulted in many of my clothes being simply too large.

I had to face that reality when I was showing a visiting cousin downtown Raleigh and found myself walking along the Fayetteville Street sidewalk trying to look inconspicuous while holding up my very favorite cargo pants.

I have since borrowed back my favorite belt from my husband's closet. A long time has passed since that belt fit, and now it does - second notch, too.

So, as the season changes, I'm looking at my fall and winter clothes. Some local charities will be getting donations of the garments that can't be altered.

Even an unworn pair of casual shoes will go into the box. I had really been looking forward to wearing them this fall, but now they're just too big.

Now, I have a bit of a shopping quandary.

The other day, I stood in front of a sales rack marked down a hard-to-resist 70 percent and thought about next summer and needing new shorts.

And then I thought about not having a paycheck at the moment. So, I passed on the sale.

I'll buy only the clothes that I must have for whatever job I find in my post-newspaper life.

And next year, I'll spend some of my tax refund on shorts for summer.

A size or two smaller, of course.

PeopleOfWalmart.com is mean, tasteless and funny

Was that a skunk in the shopping cart? Children on leashes and a man with a fake parrot on his shoulder. These are a few things you might see on PeopleOfWalmart.com, an online collection of bizarre Walmart culture. When you are as big as mega-retailer Walmart, you are bound to attract attention ... of all sorts.

Think green before back-to-school shopping

With the tax-free weekend rapidly approaching, you may be excited to rush out and snatch up all those back-to-school bargains. But before you go on a shopping frenzy, take stock and evaluate what your children really need.

'Reusable' not synonymous with 'self-cleaning'

Have you made the switch to reusable bags? Good for you! But when was the last time you washed those bags?
