The Red Cross has closed some of the evacuation shelters it opened Friday for Hurricane Irene. All residents staying at these shelters have safely returned to their homes. Here's an update.
Latest on Johnston County damage, outages, shelter
Submitted by ericf123058 on 08/27/2011 - 09:52Johnston County officials report that 217 citizens sought shelter at Smithfield-Selma High School. Currently the shelter is at 54 percent capacity. The county has an estimated 19,000 Progress Energy power outages.

N.C. Baptist Men and N.C. Social Services to shelter and feed evacuees. Mass Care Support trailers and mobile animal trailers are on standby in Halifax and Northampton counties to support those shelters.

Submitted by BruceSiceloff on 08/26/2011 - 14:44Hurricane shelters are opening Friday in Brunswick, Craven, Duplin, Halifax, Hertford, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Pender and Wilson counties.
