Wake County school board and county commissioners to meet today amid tense relations

It should be interesting today watching what happens when Wake County school board members and Wake County commissioners meet for the first time since they began warring against each other in the state legislature.

The official purpose of the meeting is to continue work on developing the next school construction bond referendum so that it can be placed on the October ballot.

According to the agenda, the meeting objectives are "understanding the overall process and timetable," "understanding the scope of needs for new schools and renovations" and "understanding the variables and assumptions used to determine the number of new schools."

UPDATE

Both boards have agreed to add to the end of today's meeting agenda a discussion about the school ownership proposal and other issues between the two boards.

Wake County school board on board vacancy, facilities utilization and voluntary desegregation

In addition to reorganizing the transportation department, the Wake County school board will appoint a new member today, approve a new voluntary desegregation resolution and discuss school facilities crowding and new school sites.

The board has set aside five hours to interview the eight applicants for the District 1 vacancy. They'll all be asked the same questions.

The vote will take place at the end of the regular meeting because the new member takes office once the vote occurs. Some board members were worried that the new member would vote tonight on items without being fully briefed.

Wake County school board to discuss school facilities utilization, superintendent search and board vacancy

The Wake County school board will tackle today school facilities utilization and filling the vacancies for superintendent and the District 1 board seat.

During the work session, the board will discuss the superintendent search process with a vote scheduled at the regular meeting on hiring a search firm. Don't be surprised if the Republican board members complain about the process, similar to how Democrats didn't like the process in 2010.

Also during the work session, the board will discuss how it will go forward with filling the board vacancy. You could see the board adopting dates to hold the interviews with the applicants and to have the votes.

Also during the work session, staff will present the 2012-13 facilities utilization report. This report takes more significance this year considering that plans are in progress to have a bond issue on the ballot this fall.
