Carrboro may join voices calling on UNC to cut ties with "Rush Radio"

By Tammy Grubb

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen will consider adding its voice next week to those calling for UNC to cut ties with Triangle radio station WRDU 106.1, which bills itself as “Rush Radio.”

The resolution will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Limbaugh sparked the controversy March 1 when he called Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and used other misogynistic language after she testified in support of President Barack Obama’s contraceptive health care coverage plan.

At least 10 major advertisers have pulled their support from Limbaugh’s show in response to the comments.

Both sides gearing up runoff election efforts

Local Democrats are pulling out all the stops to help Wake County school board member Kevin Hill defeat Heather Losurdo in the runoff election.

As noted in today's article, you've got groups like Common Sense Matters hiring The Strategy Group, a Washington political consulting firm, to develop mailers attacking Losurdo. Past clients for this firm include President Barack Obama, former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and current Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

You've also got the Wake County Democratic Party mounting, for them, an unprecedented field operation in an off-year election.

The Wanda Sykes Show: Off to a good start

Wanda Sykes launched her late night show last night (Fox, 11 pm) and got down to being Wanda right away.

The show played to her strengths with a lot of stand up, giving plenty of opportunity for her in-your-face riffs, taped skits like she used to do on Chris Rock's HBO show, and most effectively, a Chelsea Lately style roundtable.

Rush Limbaugh to switch Triangle radio stations

One of the first radio stations to broadcast Rush Limbaugh's talk show, WPTF AM-680, will be losing the conservative media icon after 21 years on the air.

Limbaugh's trademark in-your-face talk show will be moving to a competitor, WRDU FM-106.1, a country music station owned by media conglomerate Clear Channel Communications. Starting January 1, WRDU will switch to an all-talk format and feature a 9-hour non-stop marathon of conservative talk by Glenn Beck, Shawn Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

Curtis Media, the Raleigh-based company that owns WPTF, will fill the three hours vacated by Limbaugh with political talk that's more centrist and moderate, said president and chief operating officer Phil Zachary. Still, losing Limbaugh is a big deal, he said.

"We were there from the beginning, which makes this more painful," Zachary said. "We were there before Rush was arguably Rush."

Channeling Rush Limbaugh
