Looking for Wake County families who plan to file a return to base school request

The base declaration period for Wake County students to request a return to their base school for the upcoming school year starts Monday and runs through Jan. 14.

Examples of people who might file a request include students who want to leave a magnet school or who didn't get the school they wanted in the choice plan. You could also see people wanting to leave their calendar-option school.

Wake says approval will be guaranteed unless the person is seeking to return to a fully capped school. You've got 13 schools on the full-cap list for now.

I'd like to hear from you if you plan to file during the base declaration period. Please shoot me your contact info at khui@newsobserver.com.

Wake County hoping to attract enough applicants to Richland Creek Elementary School

Can the Wake County school system attract enough applicants to open Richland Creek Elementary School in Wake Forest this year?

As noted in Sunday's North Raleigh News article by Chelsea Kellner, school officials said that Richland Creek needs at least 100 students to have a principal. The school had 46 applicants after round two.

The deadline for the school board to make a decision on Richland Creek for this year will be in June.
