N.C. Solar Center awarding $1 million for transporation projects

The N.C. Solar Center is accepting grant submissions to distribute up to $1 million for local projects that reduce car and truck emissions.

The money will be awarded to businesses, nonprofits and local governments that operate their own car and truck fleets, as well as to fuel suppliers. The deadline to apply for Clean Fuel Advanced Technology grants is Sept. 10.

This is the third round of funding for the project, which distributed $2.2 million in state and federal funds to 47 projects between 2006 and 2012. Previous grants went to a national park, local governments, school systems, service station owners and fuel distributors.

In this round, officials expect applications for alternative fuel vehicle conversions, alternate refueling infrastructure and telematics, a technology using GPS and automobile navigation systems.
