Registration open for my next coupon class

Registration is now open for my next coupon workshop.

The three-hour Saturday class is scheduled for Jan. 28 and covers basic and advanced coupon techniques plus tips on meal planning and frugal living.

This class, which is fast-paced and fun, is great for anyone interested in learning how to save 50 percent or more at the grocery store or those who need a refresher course.

Time for a little coupon housekeeping

It's a new month, which means it's time to do a little coupon housekeeping.

Sunday deals are up! (Sept. 18-24)

Plenty of good deals are waiting for you at the drug stores and Kroger this week. Among the most notable: FREE candy corn at CVS, FREE Crest at Rite Aid and FREE Blistex and children's cough medicine at Walgreens. We're also starting to see deals on bags of Halloween candy!

Keep reading for a store-by-store breakdown of the deals and let me know in the comments section if you found a deal I missed because, as we all know, couponing is a team sport!

A giveaway for coupon clippers

Did you know September is National Coupon Month?

That probably explains the multitude of coupon booklets and tear pads I've spotted in stores this month. (Be on the look out because they seem to be everywhere!)

And that's a good thing for coupon clippers because more coupons in circulation translates into more (and better) deals.

So in honor of National Coupon month, let's celebrate with a giveaway.

Sunday deals are up (Aug. 21-27)

When you can shop for free - or the stores pay you to shop - you know it's a good week for deals. This week, you can pick up a free Schick razor at CVS and free hand sanitizer and free topical pain relievers at Rite Aid. And Walgreens will pay you to buy Colgate Pro-Relief Sensitive toothpaste. At Kroger, you'll pay just 18 cents for Dial soap. Read on for all the best Sunday deals.

Deal alert for grillers: A coupon and a rebate on propane

Here's a great deal for the summer grilling season: A coupon and a rebate for the purchase or exchange of a propane cylinder. All together you'll save $8.

City widens pool for potty-swap rebates

Those wonderful folks at City Hall have made rental, multifamily, commercial, industrial, and institutional city-water customers are now eligible for the city's money-back deal on toilets.

Such parties can get $100 rebates on up to 75 EPA-certified high-efficiency potties when they put them in place of old-time, water wasting models. Previously the rebates were only offered to single-family residential customers.

And those who have already installed one "WaterSense" potty and claimed a rebate can now get more for any other swaps made since the program started in 2008.

Rebates are deducted from water bills, not handed out in cash.
According to the water department, commodes flush between 20 and 30 percent of the water that households consume. Replacing 1,000 old-style water-wasting commodes could conserve around 7 million gallons of drinking-grade water a year.

Rebates are offered first-come, first-served and customers can expect to wait at least 120 days for retroactive rebate credits to be applied to their accounts. Retroactive credits have already been applied for customers whose initial rebate application indicated they replaced more than one toilet.

The rebate form, a link to approved toilets, and more details are available at www.DurhamSavesWater.org or by calling the 560-4381.

More rebates available for Energy Star appliances

State energy officials said today they have scrounged up another $1 million for rebates to residents who buy energy-efficient appliances.

The N.C. State Energy Office is making the money available to people who buy appliances with the federal Energy Star efficiency rating.

The rebates range from $75 for freezers and dishwashers to $300 for gas furnaces and air conditioners.

Appliance rebates half gone

About half the money the state offered two days ago for energy-efficient appliance rebates is already claimed as North Carolina residents lock in on rebates ranging from $75 to $300 per appliance.

As of late this afternoon, state residents have used up about half the $650,000 available to offset purchases of appliances that carry the federal government's Energy Star rating.

The rebates come from federal stimulus money allocated to states to encourage energy-efficient upgrades. Earlier this year state residents had used up more than $8 million in appliance rebates during the main phase of the program.

North Carolina officials recently found an extra $650,000 in federal stimulus funds that were originally part of North Carolina's $75.9 million State Energy Fund but had gone unspent, so the state asked the U.S. Department of Energy for permission to offer the money in more appliance refunds.

The rebates claimed so far cover Energy Star clothes washers, dishwashers, heat pumps, central air conditioners, gas furnaces, freezers, tankless water heaters and solar water heaters.
