Cary council opposes conference shift

By Andrew Kenney, akenny@newsobserver.com

Add the Cary Town Council to the long list of people unhappy with the North Carolina high school sports shuffle. The governing board is preparing a statement of opposition to the proposed changes of conference for Green Hope and Panther Creek high schools.

NCHSAA realignment proposal

The N.C. High School Athletic Association released its proposal for conference realignment on Thursday.

Panther Creek, Green Hope will appeal realignment

Cary’s Green Hope and Panther Creek will be in a high school conference with Durham Hillside, Durham Jordan, Durham Riverside, Northern Durham and Person for the next four years according to a plan approved Wednesday by the realignment committee of the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

Cleveland will stay in 3A

Johnston County's Cleveland High, which looked headed for the 2A classification, is expected to remain a 3A school in the N.C. High School Athletic Association's next alignment.

NCHSAA schools are arranged in conferences every four years. The next alignment begins in the fall of 2013.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association released a preliminary realignment plan earlier this week that had Cleveland dropping. After checking projected enrollments, however, Cleveland is expected to remain a 3A school.

The NCHSAA staff knew the first draft would have to be adjusted and is preparing a second option for the schools.
