No. 1 seed Chapel Hill postpones first games

Due to snow in Guilford County and their opponents' problems with travel, Chapel Hill's top-seeded boys' and girls' basketball teams will postpone their first-round games in the NCHSAA Mideast Regional pod to Tuesday evening.

The CHHS girls (24-2) will host No. 16 seed Eastern Guilford (15-12) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That's followed by a 7:30 p.m. boys game between No. 1 Chapel Hill (25-1) vs. No. 16 seed Southern Guilford (8-17).

The Northwood boys' game with Granville Central in the NCHSAA 2-A Mideast also has been moved, to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Carrboro girls; game at Northwood is still on for Monday night, with a 6 p.m. start.

Clayton falls at North Chatham

Down 7-0 after two innings in Pittsboro, a deficit that ballooned to 14-5 by the top of the sixth, North Chatham came back Thursday night to win Game 1 of its American Legion playoff series with Clayton by a 16-15 score.

That puts North Chatham one up versus Clayton at 7 p.m. tonight for Game 2 of the best-of-three series. The game will be played at Smithfield-Selma High School.

Saturday, if necessary, Game 3 will be back at Northwood High School's Donald Horton Baseball Complex at 7 p.m.

Local basketball teams advance to NCHSAA second round

Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill both won their opening games in the NCHSAA boys’ basketball state tournament and will play second-round games Wednesday. Orange and Northwood also won.
East Chapel Hill (21-7), a 68-46 winner Monday over Apex, will play at Middle Creek (23-4) Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Champions of the Tri-9 4-A Conference, the Mustangs eliminated Sanderson 78-56 in the first round.

Orange (11-12) will also be on the road Wednesday, playing a second-round 3-A game at Cape fear Valley champion Southern Lee (19-4). The Panthers advanced Monday with a 71-59, come-from-behind win at Eastern Guilford, thanks to a career-high 43 points by Devantay Jones.
In 2-A action, Northwood (23-4) got by Franklinton 54-47 on Monday and will host a surprising St. Paul’s team (9-14) Wednesday. Despite its lackluster record, St. Paul’s defeated 17-7 Northwest Halifax by a 50-36 score in the first round.
Carrboro (15-11) bowed out of the 2-A first round with a 64-58 loss at Bunn.

Carrboro completes best season yet

Carrboro's excellent run in the NCHSAA 2-A soccer playoffs ended Wednesday night near Jacksonville, where the Jaguars fell 4-1 to defending state champion Swansboro in the East Region final. Carrboro, which was the last area soccer team in the tournament, ends its year at 17-5-1.

That record and playoff run marks the best finish yet for Carrboro in spring soccer, completing its third year of varsity competition. With only one senior, talented Rosie Scanga, the Jaguars already figure to be one of the top contenders for another Carolina-9 title.

Head coach Robin Bulleri notes that all three local high schools -- 2-A Carrboro, 3-A Chapel Hill and 4-A East Chapel Hill -- won their respective conferences this year. And all three advanced at least to the fourth round of their respective classification's post-season tournament.

Rain hindering playoffs

Tuesday’s results were as dark as the weather for local high school teams. Of those teams that did manage to get a game finished before the rains forced multiple postponements, only the varsity soccer team from Chapel Hill came out a winner. The Tigers got a second-half goal from Chelsey Stark to defeat Northern Guilford 1-0 in the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs.
Elsewhere Tuesday, Northern Guilford defeated Orange 10-5 in NCHSAA baseball. In softball Purnell Swett defeated East Chapel Hill 4-2, and Bunn edged out visiting Northwood 7-6.
At Raleigh, Cardinal Gibbons eliminated CHHS for the dual-team tennis playoffs with a 6-3 decision.
Two baseball games were postponed until Wednesday (or maybe later, considering how it looks outside this morning.) Chapel Hill hosts Asheboro in the 3-A baseball playoffs and Carrboro is at Bartlett Yancey in a 2-A game. Both are supposed to start at 7 p.m. today.
Orange’s softball playoff game at Union Pines was put off until 6 p.m. this evening.
Things may be dry enough by tonight for the third-round matches to go on as scheduled. In the 2-A, Carrboro is at Franklinton, and Northwood is at Roanoke Rapids, all at 6 p.m. In the 4-A, perennial power Raleigh Broughton is at East Chapel Hill at 7 p.m.

Cullen rejoins Canes practice

Canes center Matt Cullen was back on the ice today for the first playoff practice at the RBC Center.

Cullen missed the last eight games of the regular season with a foot injury but did do some skating on his own last week.

"It's good to back out there and get some timing back," Cullen said. "You never know what to expect. Every injury is different in how it reacts and how long it takes you to get back."

Monday debate: Playoff Canes

We know the opponent, know the seedings and know the playoff schedule. It's the Canes and Devils, again, and it starts Wednesday in Newark.

So let's keep it short and simple today:

What do you like the most about the Canes heading into the playoffs and what worries you the most? Can they make a deep run, even grab the Cup again, or could it be one and done?

The floor is open.
