Quest for moisturizing lip balm produces organic skin care line

Danette Evans gave up her search trying to find a lip balm that moisturized the best and decided to make it herself. As a result, the Raleigh-based Danni Davis Skin was born. The skin care line features a selection of handmade organic and natural skin products. Read more about it here.

A lip balm as all natural as your lips

Since a bad experience with horribly dry lips, a good lip balm has become of the utmost importance.

I'm currently in love with Hurraw! Balm, an all natural, vegan lip balm made from raw organic and fair trade ingredients. 97 percent of the ingredients are certified organic.

Sula nail polish has plenty of a-peel

It's time to show your toes.

But your pedicure (or manicure) doesn't have to be toxic.

Sula makes a water-based nail color that can be applied, dries quickly and then, if a new color mood strikes you, can be peeled off.

Yep, no more of those polish remover fumes.

Should you buy that organic onion or not?

Not necessarily, as it turns out.

One of the biggest raps against buying organic is that it's too expensive.

Well, this cheat sheet may help. Designed by artist Heidi Kenney, it breaks down 27 fruits and vegetables into two categories: low pesticide content and always buy organic.

So you can shop a little smarter. Kenney based her list on information from the Environmental Working Group, which  has a much longer list that you can get as an iPhone app.

Tomato update from Carrboro Farmers' Market

In the wake of the recent tomato salmonella outbreak, Carrboro Farmers' Market (http://www.carrborofarmersmarket.com/) has issued the following:

"As many of you know, the salmonella tomato outbreak has caused much concern about eating and purchasing tomatoes. While Federal Health Officials are still trying to pinpoint the source of the outbreak, all signs point to large scale farm production; livestock kept in large numbers, huge processing facilities where disease can spread rapidly, contaminated water supplies or overtopped waste lagoons leaking into large industrial farm sites, etc. The bottom line is that much of our food goes through so many hands that it’s difficult to track the source of the problem. The solution: BUY LOCAL!! Please, take the time to know where your food comes from by talking to your local farmers and shopping at your local Farmers’ Markets. Be safe, be healthy, and be smart: Support our small farms and eat local NC tomatoes."

Just thought I'd pass it along. And I'll add that local tomatoes taste better, too.
