Davis sets NCHSAA record for completions

East Chapel Hill quarterback Drew Davis, the son of former University of North Carolina coach Butch Davis, has set a state high school record for completions in a single game.

Griffin reaches semis of Juniors championship

Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill defeated Elliott Grayson of Shelby, 3 & 2 Thursday afternoon in Charlotte, to advance in golf's 44th N.C. Junior Championship.  Griffin, the 2011 4-A high school champion, was to face Stanhope Johnson Jr. of Greensboro today.

Johnson defeated defending champion Carter Page of Waynesville 5 & 4 in their Thursday morning match.  Johnson, a rising high school senior, then advanced to the semifinals by defeating Tanner Owen of High Point on the 19th hole at Pine Island Country Club.

 Dylan Harris of Southern Pines and Victor Wiggins of Gastonia were in the other semifinal.

In the girls’ division, Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill defeated stroke-play medalist Emily Pagrabs of Wilmington 4 & 3 to reach the quarterfinals.  Brooks was then beaten by Kayla Sciupider of Etowah 6 & 5.

NCHSAA champion Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill and Northwood's conference champion, Emily Brooks, both won their opening rounds in match play Wednesday at the 44th N.C. Junior Championship in Charlotte.

Baseball playoff games on for tonight

East Chapel Hill scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh and won 4-3 Tuesday night at Raleigh Athens Drive. The Wildcats were the only local team to get their NCHSAA baseball playoff game completed.

Chapel Hill suspended play in its game with Union Pines due to heavy rain, and will resume play at 7 p.m. tonight. Carrboro will play at Eastern Randolph at 7 p.m.

East Chapel Hill will next play no earlier than Friday, facing either Durham Jordan or Leesville Road. Those two suspended play last night with Jordan holding a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. They'll resume at 5 p.m  today,

 

 

East's Griffin wins 4-A golf championship

 

PINEHURST -- Ben Griffin of East Chapel Hill won a dramatic playoff with Greenville Rose's Andrew Decker on Tuesday to take the individual championship in the 75th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst No. 6.

Griffin won it on the second playoff hole, chipping in to save par on a par four, after the two had finished deadlocked in the regulation 36 holes with 137 totals, five under par.

Andrew Klassing of Charlotte Ardrey Kell was third in the individual standings with a 140. Defending champ Grayson Murray of Raleigh Leesville Road was one of three golfers in a tie for fourth at even par 142, but Carter Jenkins of Leesville won on the first playoff hole to take the fourth spot over Murray and Philip Oweida of Charlotte Myers Park.
The championship was held on a par-71 layout set at 6,537 yards or the NCHSAA event.

Leesville Road held on to capture the team championship with a 292 score on Tuesday for a 577 total, four shots ahead of Myers Park. Ardrey Kell was third with a 593, followed by Raleigh Wakefield and Cary Green Hope. Six of the 12 teams in the field broke 600.

Wildcat lacrosse goes blogging

The East Chapel Hill High School lacrosse team’s web page got a face-lift recently from Don Wittenkind.

Among the new features, Wittenkind will be blogging and feeding live updates from Wildcat Stadium to the page during Friday’s second-round NCHSAA playoff double-header.

The East girls host No. 1 Apex at 5 p.m. Friday, and the boys host Middle Creek at 7 p.m.

Jordan takes lead in Wachovia Conference Cup standings

After the completion of a successful winter sports season, Jordan High School has taken over the lead in the Piedmont Athletic 4-A standings for the annual Wachovia Conference Cup.
Jordan won the Piedmont Athletic 4-A Conference championship in men’s basketball and delivered second-place performances in men’s and women’s swimming to earn 60 points. Second-place East Chapel Hill (55.5), the leader in fall sports, swept the PAC-6 swimming championships.
Northern Durham (50.5) moved into third after finishing first in wrestling and women’s basketball. Riverside (49) is fourth, followed by Roxboro Person (29.5), Southern Durham (25) and Hillside (23.5).
The Wachovia Cup award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual conference. Points are awarded based upon final standings for each sport in each conference.
In the Carolina 1/2-A, Carrboro High School holds a top spot in the Wachovia Conference Cup standings after the NCHSAA’s winter season. After a championship in men’s swimming and a runner-up finish in women’s swimming, Carrboro has 84.5 points, followed closely behind by Cedar Ridge.
Cedar Ridge finished second in men’s basketball and third in wrestling, and now has 81.5 points. Men’s basketball conference champion Northwood is in third with 77 points. The N.C. School of Science and Math (73.5) and Durham School of the Arts (63) round out the Carolina 1/2-A's top five, followed by Raleigh Charter (56), South Granville (44), Granville Central (41.5), River Mill (27), Roxboro Community (10).

After a championship in men’s swimming and a runner-up finish in women’s swimming, Carrboro has 84.5 points in the standings for the Carolina 2-A Conference, followed closely behind by Cedar Ridge.
The Wachovia Cup award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In the Carolina 3-A, Cardinal Gibbons (55 points) leads the way after a commanding winter performance, taking a title in women’s basketball, finishing second in men’s and women’s swimming and third in wrestling.
Chapel Hill (52) is close behind in second, with a conference crown in men’s basketball and a runner-up finish in wrestling. The wrestling champion, Orange (38.5), is third, also finishing second in women’s basketball.  Southern Vance (25), Oxford Webb (24.5) and Northern Vance (22) round out the conference.
Jordan has taken over the lead in the Piedmont Athletic 4-A Conference, passing fall leader East Chapel Hill. Jordan won the PAC-6 championship in men’s basketball and delivered second-place performances in men’s and women’s swimming to earn 60 points. Second-place East Chapel Hill (55.5) swept the PAC-6 swimming championships.

Carolina Basketball Museum open Saturday for NCHSAA fans

If you plan to attend Saturday’s high school championships at the Smith Center, you should know that the University of North Carolina basketball museum will have extended hours to accommodate fans.
The museum will be open from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Saturday. It is located in the Ernie Williamson Athletic Center, adjacent to the Koury Natatorium and the Smith Center.
Admission is free. The museum features memorabilia highlighting Tar Heel basketball and a number of interactive video displays.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association state basketball championships in Chapel Hill begin at noon Saturday with the girls’ 2-A game. The boys’ 2-A game — with Northwood (28-4) against East Rutherford (26-1) — begins at 2:30 p.m.
The 4-A finals, both of them featuring Raleigh Millbrook, follow at 5 p.m. (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys).

 

Orange wrestlers leading after Day 1 at NCHSAA championships

Orange is in first place as the second day of the NCHSAA state wrestling championships gets underway in Greensboro. Two CHHS wrestlers also won their first matches in the championships.
