CHAPEL HILL — William & Mary's visit to Kenan Stadium between critical ACC games was a trap. North Carolina knew that.

William & Mary is one of the best teams in the Football Championship Subdivision. North Carolina knew that, too.

Still, the Tar Heels needed a fourth-quarter comeback to edge the Tribe, 21-17 on Saturday for their fifth win of the season.

Reserve quarterback Mike Paulus won't be with North Carolina when it plays in the Meineke Bowl on Dec. 26 -- although the Tar Heels will see him again next season.

Coach Butch Davis announced that the sophomore will transfer and plans on attending William & Mary, where he should be able to play immediately next year. The Tar Heels have The Tribe on their schedule in 2010.

Freshman Bryn Renner's considered North Carolina's quarterback of the future. Whether that future will be sooner than later, UNC coach Butch Davis doesn't know, he said Wednesday.

Davis said junior T.J. Yates is still the starter, but didn't rule out the possibility of using Renner, who is considered one of the best quarterback prospects nationally in his class.

UNC released its two-deep chart for Saturday's opener against The Citadel (6 p.m.). There were few surprises but among the highlights:

• Sophomore Zach Brown will get the starting nod at weakside linebacker over freshman Kevin Reddick. Brown, the hero of timing day with a 4.28 in the 40, played primarily on special teams last season.

Duke basketball player Greg Paulus has a sense of what his brother Mike, a backup redshirt freshman quarterback for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team, is going through these days.

With UNC starter T.J. Yates getting injured in the second half against Virginia Tech with the Heels leading, Paulus came off the bench and threw two interceptions. The Heels let the lead slip in an eventual loss and Paulus took his share of heat as a result.

Paulus and Cameron Sexton both played the following week in a win at Miami where Sexton, a junior, emerged as Yates' replacement.

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina sophomore Greg Little doesn’t see himself as competing for the starting tailback position with Shaun Draughn, who ran for over 100 yards against Connecticut, instead, Little said, “he’s pushing me, and I’m pushing him … to try to make each other better.”

Draughn, a converted safety, came in on UNC’s second offensive series of the game and rushed 19 times for 109 yards and a touchdown. Little, a converted wide receiver, made his fifth consecutive start in the backfield but rushed only three times for six yards.

Both Mike Paulus and Cam Sexton will play quarterback for UNC against Miami on Saturday, UNC coach Butch Davis said Wednesday.

Davis still hasn't named a starter for the Tar Heels road trip to Miami and first game without starter T.J. Yates, who is out for at least six weeks with an ankle injury.
