WRAL recruits WUNC's Leslie to expand political coverage

The voice of public radio's political coverage in North Carolina is going commercial.

Laura Leslie, who has covered state politics and government at WUNC for more than six years, is joining WRAL as a multimedia reporter. Her last day at WUNC is today, and she'll start at WRAL on Friday.

In her new role, Leslie will continue coverage of the legislature and state politics. Leslie said she'll focus mostly on expanding WRAL's online coverage, including webcasts and podcasts, as the General Assembly prepares to return to Raleigh.

"I'll be telling the same stories, but I'll have new ways to tell them," she said. "The news business is changing and legislative coverage needs to change with it. I see it as an immense opportunity."

Recruiting Leslie signals that WRAL, owned by Raleigh-based Capitol Broadcasting, is seeking to beef up its legislative coverage as Republicans control the General Assembly for the first time since 1898.

Time Warner Cable adds 'Look Back' function

The Triangle's largest pay-TV provider has added a feature that allows digital cable subscribers to go back and watch shows they missed during the previous three days.

Time Warner Cable's "Look Back" service is the latest extra the company is marketing in this region to stand out from competitors and sell higher-priced digital bundles.

The company also offers a "Start Over" function that allows viewers to restart a show in progress.

Time Warner Cable shares climb

Shares of Time Warner Cable rose today after the Triangle's largest pay-TV provider reported stronger financial results and announced plans to buy back $4 billion of its stock.

The company is selling more services to its existing customers, helping offset the loss of some cable-TV subscribers.

Nationally, Time Warner Cable added 104,000 broadband subscribers, but lost 155,000 video subscribers. The company blamed increasing competition from phone and satellite TV providers, and the economy.

CEO Glenn Britt said the company is considering a "value" cable-TV package to win back some of the budget-focused households it's losing.

She began her career with ACBJ in 1986 in the circulation department of the Charlotte Business Journal.

Here are some highlights from a telephone interview with Grunwaldt:
