Five closed schools reopening Tuesday

Classes are reopening Tuesday for the five Wake County schools who were closed today because of this weekend's storm.

School officials are warning that some bus service might still be disrupted. Click here for more information.

The schools will make up today on April 30, a Saturday. That's pretty common for the multi-track year-round schools but no sot much for modified-calendar schools like Moore Square Middle.

School board adopts 2011 Legislative Agenda

The Wake County school board adopted its 2011 Legislative Agenda tonight after some unusual machinations.

After various motions, the board essentially adopted the draft agenda presented by staff. The big difference is that the board did decide to add a request that the General Assembly pass a law allowing the school board chair to vote on all issues.

The process for getting to the final outcome was convoluted.

Wake announces make-up days for today

Some Wake County year-round students will pay for the snow days with back-to-back Saturdays in class.

Year-round students on tracks 1, 2 and 3 will make up today this Saturday, Jan. 15. Year-round students on tracks 2, 3 and 4 will be in class Jan. 22 to make up for missing school on Dec. 16.

Traditional-calendar students will make up today on Feb. 22, a Tuesday. This will cut into what was supposed to be a long four-day weekend over President's Day. They already made up the December snow day last week.

Wake opening on a two-hour delay on Friday

No official decision has been made yet about Friday but it's a pretty good bet that school will open in Wake County on a delay.

Districts typically open on a one-hour or two-hour delay the weekday after a snow day. This pattern is more likely to be broken when there's a weekend in between.

UPDATE

Wake has just announced that schools will open Friday on a two-hour delay. Officials say they'll monitor conditions overnight to see if classes should be cancelled.

Wake changing the makeup days for traditional-calendar schools

Wake County school leaders are deviating from their own calendar in terms of announcing potential makeup days should school close Thursday.

Wake says that traditional-calendar students would make up Thursday on Jan. 3. Year-round students would make up the day at some point in January.

But Wake's 2010-11 approved calendar for traditional-calendar schools says the next makeup day that should be used is Dec. 22, the first day of winter break. The schedule lists Jan. 3, the last day of winter break, as the second day that would be used.

The school district says they'd use Jan. 3 "due to the short notice and in order to minimize the impact on families."

UPDATE

Wake pulled the trigger at 5:30 a.m. to close school Thursday. As already noted, Wake is flopping the order of the makeup days so that traditional-calendar students will make up Thursday on Jan. 3 and not Dec. 22. No word yet on when year-round students would make it up in January.

Modified-calendar students will make it up on March 14.

Wake has set Jan. 22 as the make-up day for year-round schools. Here's Wake's explanation for that day:

"Students affected by the school closure are on tracks 2, 3 and 4. January 22 was selected in order to accommodate students who will already be in school on tracks 2 and 3. Students on track 4 are scheduled to start the following Monday, January 24."

Waiting to hear about possible delays on Thursday

Wake County parents may find out before their children go to bed this evening whether school will be delayed, or even cancelled, on Thursday.

School officials say they'd like to make a call about classes on Thursday before this evening's 11 p.m. TV newscasts. One way to also find out is to click here to register for the school district's e-mail notification service.

School officials aren't making a prediction about tomorrow, but snow watch veterans know it's likely that at least a one-hour or two-delay will be announced. The thought of high school students driving themselves to class as snow is falling and just as the sun is rising isn't a pleasant thought.

UPDATE

Wake says it will make a decision about Thursday by 10 p.m. tonight.

Potential changes in 2010-11 traditional calendar

Wake County traditional-calenar parents may want to keep their winter break plans for the 2010-11 school year flexible.

It's possible that the new school board majority may make changes that would eliminate teacher workdays scheduled for Dec. 22 and Jan. 3, respectively the first and last days of winter break. A work day on Oct. 1 might also be cut.

If they're eliminated, it would be done to build up more potential makeup days to avoid cutting into spring break.

Warning about Saurday's makeup day

Here's the pitfall of using Saturday as a makeup day for year-round schools in Wake County.

School officials are sending this warning message to parents about tomorrow:

"While anticipating a regular make up day for its year-round calendar schools tomorrow, the Wake County Public School System is advising parents to tune into Saturday morning news programming or check the system's website in the unlikely event that weather conditions would impact travel.

The system will have transportation supervisors monitoring road conditions early Saturday morning."

Wake schedules makeup days for Wednesday

Wake County has officially announced the makeup days for today's snow day.

As expected, traditional-calendar students will now have class on March 29, which was to have been the first day of spring break. Year-round students will now attend class on May 8, their third Saturday of the school year.

Wake schools reopening on a one-hour delay Thursday

It's time to return back to class for students in the Wake County school system.

Classes will resume Thursday on a one-hour delay after having been cancelled for three days. School officials say the one-hour delay is because of expected overnight freezing temperatures and the chance of icy conditions, especially in outlying areas.
