"The Client List" will rub you the right way

During this recession, there have been a few stories of people turning to the sex industry to make ends meet (although there have also been stories that even the sex industry is struggling).

That's the backdrop for "The Client List" (Lifetime, 9 tonight), a funny, sexy, earnest little movie about a Texas beauty queen and physical therapist who takes a job at a massage parlor. It's inspired by a true story.

Jennifer Love Hewitt plays Samantha Horton, a pretty woman and mother of three whose mother (Cybill Shepherd) has always emphasized her daughter's looks, and taught her to use them to her advantage. Horton is married to the star college football player (Teddy Sears), but a bum knee has taken them out of the running to be the 'next Angie Harmon and Jason Sehorn' and left them struggling. Horton puts on a sexy dress and uses her cleavage, and then a photographic memory, to get them an extension on their mortgage.

Jill Biden will appear on "Army Wives"

Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will make a special appearance on the Lifetime drama "Army Wives" in August.

Dr. Biden will appear as herself, showing up at the fictional Fort Marshall to kickoff the post's annual Fun Run. While on base, she'll talk to some of the characters about the challenges families face while loved ones are deployed. The network says many real Army wives will be featured in the episode, too.

Dr. Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama have both been active in efforts to raise awareness of the challenges facing military families.

What to Watch on Saturday: "Dr. Who" returns with new lead

Dr. Who (9pm, BBC America) - It's the fifth season premiere of the popular U.K. sci-fi show, and Matt Smith (right) replaces David Tennant in the lead role. In the first episode, the 11th Doctor (Smith) must save the world in 20 minutes, even though the TARDIS is wrecked and his sonic screwdriver is disabled. Tune in at 8pm for a special "Ultimate Guide to Dr. Who" and that last sentence might make sense to you.

The Front (9pm, Lifetime) - It's the second part to last week's so-so "Patricia Cornwell's 'At Risk'" Lifetime movie. Adrienne says this one is better. Starring Andie MacDowell, Daniel Sunjata and Diahann Carroll

Strikeforce: Nashville (9pm, CBS) - There's a big Mixed Martial Arts match. I don't get it, but there you go.

The Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") and Laila Ali are guests.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Tonight's host is Ryan Phillippe, who incidentally co-stars in the new film version of "MacGruber." So it's pretty much a given that we'll be treated (ugh) to at least one MacGruber sketch. Ke$ha is the musical guest.

"The Front": The second time is better than the first time

Well what do you know?!

Last week, I was sorely disappointed by "At Risk," the first Lifetime movie based on a Patricia Cornwell novel, starring Andie MacDowell and Daniel Sunjata. In a word, it was tedious.

So it was with trepidation that I screened "The Front" (9 tonight), the second Lifetime movie from Cornwell's work with the same characters.

But instead of being bored again, I was pleasantly surprised. This one kind of works.

"Patricia Cornwell's At Risk": Not worth taking a chance

I've never read a Patricia Cornwell book, but I know that she's beloved and well read, a best-selling author whose Kay Scarpetta character will be played in a movie by Angelina Jolie. (She also graduated from Davidson College and was a reporter for the Charlotte Observer.)

"At Risk" (Lifetime, tonight at 9) marks the first time one of
Cornwell's crime novels has been turned into a TV movie, and it features her Win Garano character, a mixed-race Massachusetts State investigator, and his cold, calculating boss Monique "Money" Lamont.

Sounds good, huh? Nope.

What to Watch on Saturday: Tina Fey hosts SNL

Patricia Cornwell's At Risk (9pm, Lifetime) - In a new Lifetime movie based on a novel by Patricia Cornwell, an ambitious Boston DA (Andie McDowell) sends a detective (Daniel Sunjata) to Tennessee to investigate a decades-old murder in hopes of promoting her tough-on-crime initiative. In case you couldn't guess, this is not a Scarpetta movie. Annabelle Gish and Diahann Carroll also star.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Tina Fey has confirmed she will reprise her Sarah Palin impression in her hosting duties tonight. Also, give the kiddies some coffee because Justin Bieber is the musical guest (OMG! OMG! Screeeeech!).

Austin City Limits (12midnight, UNC-TV) - It's a repeat, but still -- it's Kings of Leon and Roky Erikson

"Amish Grace": Learning to forgive the unforgiveable

I read an article recently about the Lifetime brand struggling with its identity; it doesn't know whether to be the hip network that airs "Project Runway" or the women-in-jeopardy, serious drama network that skews a little older.

I enjoy Heidi and the gang, but I wouldn't want to give up a film like "Amish Grace" (Lifetime Movie Network, channel 47, 8 tonight).

It's a thoughtful, well-acted piece that explores some intriguing issues in an approachable way.

"Who Is Clark Rockefeller?" We still don't know

It's always scary to think that someone you know may not be who you think they are.

It's even scarier if you're married to that person.

That's why I was so excited about watching "Who is Clark Rockefeller?" (Lifetime, 9 tonight), the movie based on the true story of a man who for years fooled a whole lot of people, even his wife, into thinking he was a member of the wealthy American family.

Unfortunately, like the wife in this film, I was duped. The movie isn't what I thought it was.

What to Watch on Saturday: Jude Law and Pearl Jam on SNL

Parenthood (8pm, NBC) - Repeat from Tuesday night of NBC's new drama starring Lauren Graham and Peter Krause. I'm going to keep pushing this one on you.

Who is Clark Rockefeller? (9pm, Lifetime) - Eric McCormack ("Will & Grace") stars in this original Lifetime movie about a real life con artist who claims to be a Rockefeller, marries a millionaire (played by Sherry Stringfield of "ER"), and then does a whole bunch of bad stuff. Check out Adrienne's review.

The Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - Financial guru Suze Orman is Wanda's guest.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Jude Law (right) hosts, with musical guest Pearl Jam. Jude Law, who recently starred on Broadway in "Hamlet," has hosted once before, in October of 2004.

"Sins of the Mother": A poetic tale of forgiveness

"Sins of the Mother" (Lifetime, 8 p.m.) has an overly dramatic name, and there is plenty of drama.

But really, it's less scandalous than it sounds, a touching and sometimes poetic story about forgiveness and love.

The film stars Jill Scott as Nona, a recovering alcoholic with a young daughter by a man she met in AA.

She also has an older daughter LaShay -- or Shay, as she now wants to be called --- who's a graduate student.
