So another Lazy Daze has come and gone and for the fourth year in a row I attended this glorious festival of arts, crafts and kettle corn.

And for the fourth year in a row I practically melted.

This year wasn't as bad as some previous — the late August day being usually cool — but it was still August! In North Carolina!

Who decided to have the town's premier outdoor event during the hottest month of the year in a subtropical climate? It doesn't make sense and it detracts from the success and numbers at the festival.

Last year when I manned The Cary News booth the weather was more typically Southern, so thick it seemed to choke you in a coal-hot vice. Last year some festival attendants even told us they were going home early because it was so hot, and the crowds in general seemed smaller last year than this one.

I attribute the change in numbers to the weather. Simply put: More people came out this year because it was cooler.

Humidity is no one's friend.

And even more people would come out if the town held the fair during an even cooler time, say the FALL.

The Town of Cary has Spring Daze, why not Fall Daze? October for example. The same great arts and crafts along with bobbing for apples and Halloween contests. Kids and adults alike could wear the costumes with no worries — because it would be COOLER.

Changing the season of Lazy Daze makes even more sense when one puts the idea in a macro and micro societal context — i.e. global warming; the fact that increasing numbers of Cary residents have more heat-sensitive, Northeastern-reared constitutions; the fact that I usually have to walk around the festival and interview people in the hot sun and the sweat dripping on my notebook while conducting said interviews is fairly unsightly.

The Town of Cary should hold Lazy Daze during a cooler month of the year.

It would be better for the festival, and better for those attending.
