Bleak budget situation

It's a pretty grim looking budget.

Supt. Del Burns is warning that they might not be able to rehire all of the 1,496 employees whose contracts expire June 30. He said it all depends on the funding from the state.

Principals are being asked to only fill 95 percent of their positions to cover for a possible 5 percent cut in state funding. Burns is warning they may have to layoff employees on continuing contracts if the cut is deeper than 5 percent.

Worrying about layoffs

Layoffs are not something that's typically mentioned in the Wake school system.

But as noted in today's article, that's a question that a lot of school employees are wondering about in the face of the economic crisis. For the first time in awhile, people are dusting off their copies of Wake's reduction in force (RIF) policies.

It's policies 3430 and 4430.
