At Simon Fraser, a laptop sting operation
Submitted by eferreri on 12/26/2009 - 06:45On college campuses, laptop computers are a popular target for thieves. They're everywhere, and nobody would blink an eye to see someone walking around with one.
At Simon Fraser University in Canada, officials are sick of all the theft and have employed a sting operation. They're using a "bait" computer wired with an alarm in hopes of catching thieves.
So far no luck with the thief, but the effort, which has been publicized, has had a deterrent effect, officials there say.
Turn off your laptop and drive. It's the law (tomorrow).

Don’t worry, it’s still legal to mesmerize yourself with all sorts of other distracting gadgets. And still dangerous.
You can still gaze at GPS and other navigation gizmos, audio system displays, and that cute little screen that tells drivers of some cars what kind of gas mileage they’re getting. It’s OK also to look at one of those video images designed to keep you from backing the car over a tricycle in your driveway.
The new law is an update of an ancient ban that only covered live television broadcasts received via TV antennas. It’s not clear whether the new law restricts our freedom to fiddle with our iPods as we drive.

At UNCG, laptops no longer required

Why? It's too expensive, not for students but for the university, which has subsidized the venture to the tune of $700,000 a year in grants.
The laptop requirement has been in place since 2005.
