Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata on changes to student assignment plan and JROTC at the single-sex schools

Here's a condensed recap of today's press conference held by Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata.

Tata said his staff will work through the weekend to be able to present at Tuesday's school board meeting the impact of making adjustments to the feeder patterns. He didn't go into specifics but said they're addressing some areas of concern that have been raised.

Tata said they'll also present info on the feasibility of making changes such as raising student achievement over proximity in the selection process and setting aside 15 percent of the seats at the high-performing regional choice schools for applicants from low-performing areas.

Speakers ask for rejection of expansion of JROTC program

The anti-Junior ROTC movement appears to be out at tonight's Wake County school board meeting.

Five of the 11 speakers have signed up to speak about a proposal to add an Army JROTC unit at Knightdale High. The board is also set to ratify the prior agreement to set up an Army JROTC program at Garner High.

"JROTC is part of the military industrial complex that promotes and profits from war," said Sandy Irving.

UPDATE

The JROTC program was approved as part of the consent agenda. Only school board member Anne McLaurin voted against the consent agenda. She didn't give a reason.

Jennifer Mansfield discusses school board candidacy on WPTF

Wake County school board candidate Jennifer Mansfield is praising the actions of the new school board majority while also warning that things have become too politicized.

In an interview Thursday on the Rick and Donna Martinez Show on WPTF, Mansfield highlighted he tightrope she's walking on of trying to get people who disagree with incumbent Kevin Hill to vote for her instead of Heather Losurdo.

"District 3 for the last four years has not had a voice for parents and students so that's first and foremost is to be a voice for District 3 residents," Mansfield answered when asked why she's running. "And we need somebody who's in there whose experienced and I've been doing this for over six years, been involved in school issues."

Tata announces new STEM and Global Schools

Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata announced today the names of eight of the 10 schools that will get special academic programs for the 2011-12 school year to make them more attractive to parents.

Tata said that Hilburn Drive, York and Aversboro elementary schools, Carroll Middle School and Knightdale High School will receive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs.

Tata announced that Timber Drive, Jeffreys Grove and Stough elementary schools will receive Global Schools programs that will include things such as greater emphasis on teaching foreign languages.

UPDATE

In case I didn't make it clear in my budget post, Tata said today that he has no plans to cut back on the new STEM schools and Global Schools even in the face of deeper than projected state funding cuts.
