'Walk 4 Kay' drive benefits Kay Yow Cancer Fund

N.C. State’s women’s basketball team will host its fourth annual Hoops 4 Hope basketball game on Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum at 1 p.m.

The Wolfpack faces No. 21 Florida State in a game that has become one of the program’s most well-attended as it benefits the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

N.C. State students to honor Kay Yow

N.C. State senior Jeffery Johnson never met Kay Yow, but after directing a student-lead project honoring the former Wolfpack women’s basketball coach he feels connected to her spirit.

Johnson, a member of State’s student government, worked with fellow students for nearly a year to organize a memorial that pays tribute to Yow, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who died on Jan. 24, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

Yow to be the first honored in NCSU's new "Coaches Corner"

N.C. State will unveil a new garden memorial Tuesday honoring its popular and successful  former women's basketball coach Kay Yow.

She'll become the first of several of the school's championship coaches to eventually be honored in "Coaches Corner," a memorial garden on the west side of Reynolds Coliseum.

Among the speakers at the unveiling will be Chancellor Randy Woodson and Yow's sister, Debbie, now NCSU's atheletic director.

The student government raised $85,000 to create the memorial garden. Yow, who died in January 2009 after a long struggle with cancer, was picked by the students to be the first coach honored there.

A stone-paved walkway in the garden leads to a bust of Yow on a pink granite pedastal.

After the unveiling there will be a reception at the Talley Student Center.

The event begins at 3 p.m. It's open to the public, and parking will be avilable at the adjacent coliseum deck. .

Glance thanks N.C. State for opportunity

Prepared statement from Stephanie Glance:

I would like to thank NC State University for affording me the chance to be a part of such a fine institution for the last 15 years. I am saddened today that I will not have the opportunity to be the next head coach for the women's basketball program. I would like to especially thank the fans, former players, and coaches from around the country who have sent letters, emails, and made phone calls on my behalf. Thank you sincerely for your  support!

I am MOST grateful for the lessons learned from the legendary Coach Kay Yow! These will stay with me for a lifetime!

I wish her successor the best.

Oblinger's State of N.C. State speech

N.C. State Chancellor James Oblinger authored his second state-of-the-university address today, speaking for more than 30 minutes on topics ranging from the budget crunch to a recently-concluded, $1 billion fundraising campaign.

You can watch the speech here, or read the transcript by clicking on the attachment below.

Among Oblinger's shout-outs, the chancellor recognized notable alums like Robert Gibbs - the new White House Press Secretary - and Cullen Jones, an Olympic swimming gold medalis.

He also noted that the ongoing budget crisis may force NCSU to shave up to $36 million from its budget, a reduction that will may force layoffs.

He also mentioned Kay Yow, NCSU's women's basketball coach who recently succumbed to cancer.

"You know that her presence will be felt at N.C. State for a long time to come," he said, according to the transcript. "While we are sad at her passing, I think I speak for everyone who knew her - or knew of her - when I say the greatest loss is the succession of student athletes and community members who will not get to know Kay Yow. N.C. State remembers."
