Sutter to miss game; Peters to start
Submitted by chipalexander on 03/13/2010 - 12:14Center Brandon Sutter, who suffered a leg injury Thursday against Pittsburgh, will not play tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes but could return soon, coach Paul Maurice said today.
The Canes also will give Justin Peters his second straight start after his 37-save effort in the 4-3 overtime win over the Penguins.
Maurice said Sutter was hurt on a noncontact play, losing an edge in the corner during the first period. He left the game for good after a collision with Evgeni Malkin of the Pens with about 5:30 left in the period.
"We're hopeful in a couple of days he's get a little more healing in and he'll be ready," Maurice said. "He tried it this morning and just didn't feel comfortable."
Same goal but different look for Canes
Submitted by chipalexander on 03/07/2010 - 10:34ATLANTA -- The Canes still believe they can make it happen. But do they have enough to make it happen?
A year ago, the Canes surged into the playoffs with Cam Ward in goal and at his best. The defensemen were Tim Gleason and Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen and Dennis Seidenberg, Niclas Wallin and either Anton Babchuk or Frantisek Kaberle.
In the last 18 games this season, with no room for error if they want to reach the playoffs, the Canes have Manny Legace and Justin Peters -- who both started the season in the AHL -- splitting the goaltending. On the back end are Gleason and Brian Pothier, Pitkanen and Alex Picard, and Brett Carson and Jay Harrison.
On depending on Legace and Peters, Canes coach Paul Maurice said, "We can only go on the facts and the facts say their play in the last month and a half has been good enough. It just has."
Peters, Legace splitting weekend duties in goal
Submitted by chipalexander on 03/05/2010 - 14:53Canes coach Paul Maurice said today that Justin Peters would start in goal Saturday against the Florida Panthers, with Manny Legace in net Sunday in Atlanta against the Thrashers.
The Canes' seven-game winning streak has come with goaltender Cam Ward sidelined with a back injury. Legace picked up his fourth win in the streak Thursday as Carolina topped Ottawa 4-1.
Peters excited about facing Devils, Brodeur
Submitted by chipalexander on 02/10/2010 - 13:12Manny Legace will start in goal Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres, and Justin Peters will go Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, Canes coach Paul Maurice said today.
For Peters, that could mean having Martin Brodeur in the opposite net. That's a lot to think about, but Peters seems eager and ready for the challenge.
"He's someone I've grown up watching," Peters said today. "The way he can handle the puck, the way he controls the game out there made him
someone I definitely grew up watching and idolized."
Canes add depth at blue line

Harrison was signed to a one-year, two-way contract that would pay him $500,000 at the NHL level and $125,000 in the AHL, with $175,000 guaranteed.
Peters official, Gleason to IR
Submitted by Javier_Serna on 12/02/2008 - 16:55The Carolina Hurricanes officially recalled goaltender Justin Peters from AHL affiliate Albany Tuesday.
The move comes after starting goalie Cam Ward suffered a groin injury in Sunday’s loss to the Anaheim Ducks. To make room for Peters in the roster, the Canes moved injured defender Tim Gleason to injured reserve.
