Here's something you might want to check out during Sunday's Super Bowl game, especially if you're a fan of the trivia contests popular at sports bars.

A Charlotte start-up has created an interactive iPhone app (there's also a web interface) called OtherScreen that lets you answer trivia questions and interact with other viewers while watching TV shows that typically draw a lot of social media participation -- shows like "American Idol," "The Bachelor," "The Voice," "The Grammys" and sporting events (national and local).

The app was developed by Chris Halligan, Garth Moulton and Andrew Gertig, who won an NC Idea technology grant for their idea last summer.

I gave it a try earlier this week during an episode of "American Idol," and I have to admit I got sucked into it pretty quickly. And I didn't do too badly, especially considering it was my only time watching "Idol" this season.

Exciting news (for me, anyway): Time Warner Cable intoduced its iPhone app today.

The app is essentially the same as the TWC app that has already been available for the iPad, it's just that now it works on the phone.

Just install the app -- TWC TV -- from the App Store, and if you've already created an online TWC account (to pay bills or access online content or DVR management), sign in and you're ready to go.

I just took it for a spin and it works pretty well. It certainly looks nice. As with the iPad app, you have to be at home on your home network to watch live television content. But you can look at a television guide and manage the programs on your DVR, including setting new programs to record, from anywhere.

A Scotty McCreery iPhone app. Didn't see that one coming.

It sounds crazy but it's actually a pretty neat idea. The new app, which bills itself as "the official app for American Idol Season 10 Winner Scotty McCreery," is developed by BlueHaze Inc and promises to help fans "stay connected with up to the minute updates from Scotty."

The "Scotty and Me" feature, which allows you to take a picture of yourself with Scotty that you can share with your friends (see below), is reason enough to download the free app. (Can't you see the love in WarmTV's eyes?)

But there's much more to the app. There's a Scotty McCreery Trivia Game, the complete American Idol Tour schedule, Scotty's Twitter feed, a Fan Wall to share Scotty thoughts, the latest Scotty news, and more.

It also plays all of Scotty's songs from the "American Idol" show.

The Wolfpack blasting through a line of Florida State Seminoles is in the palm of your hand and it is easy. Sketch Nation Shooter just may be my favorite iPhone app right now. There are a lot of games in the App store, but this one lets you make your own. Wolfpack fans will not want to miss this video demo.

On HBO's "Eastbound & Down," former professional baseball pitcher Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) has fallen on hard times, but still working on a comeback in Mexico and doing his best to win over fans.

HBO has created a new game for your iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad) based on Kenny's comeback premise. The game lets Kenny practice his pitching while you practice batting. The "Kenny Powers Home Run Fiesta" app has retro 8-bit graphics, antics and insults from Kenny, and exclusive content from the show.

The app is intended for users 17 years of age and older, since it has mature content (mild profanity, mild violence, mild sexual content, etc).
