New iPhones reported to be unveiled Oct. 4

Apple is said to be planning an event to unveil the Cupertino company's latest mobile products on Tuesday, October 4.

A report from AllThingsD says new CEO Tim Cook will lead the event where Apple will reveal its new iPhone, and likely more than one.

Apple has been rumored to be developing a new iPhone with a substantially different design with a larger screen and more tapered design than the current iPhone 4. There have also been reports of an iPhone 4s, a freshened version of the current iPhone 4, that could launch as a lower priced device. iPod touch fans may also get news.

Without an official word, Apple could still be firming up plans or be waiting for the moment of maximum effect for the announcement.

Along with the buzz surrounding the iOS devices, eyes will be watching Cook's performance during the event.

Bloomberg: Sprint to sell iPhone with unlimited data

Sprint reportedly has plans that could lure customers from chief rivals AT&T and Verizon - unlimited plans.

According to Bloomberg, Sprint intends to offer unlimited data plans with its own iPhone expected to go on sale in October. The move would make Sprint the only carrier in the U.S. to offer the iPhone with unlimited data. AT&T and Verizon eliminated their unlimited plans in favor of tiered pricing for new customers.

Did Apple lose another iPhone prototype?

Did Apple lose another iPhone prototype in a bar?

CNET, which is part of the CBS family of websites, reports an unreleased iPhone model was left in a San Francisco tequila lounge in late July.

(You might remember the similar saga surrounding another recent prototype, which also was left in a bar by N.C. State graduate Robert Gray Powell.)

The CNET report states the iPhone likely had advanced hardware encased in a current-generation body. Apple's investigators traced the missing phone from the tequila lounge to a home in San Francisco, but did not recover the phone after the home was searched.

The CNET report also says the phone might have been sold on Craigslist for $200.

Apple rolls out enhancements to reuse, recycling programs

Apple quietly rolled out enhancements to its reuse and recycling programs today. The additions? iPhones and iPads will now be accepted for Apple Gift Card trade-ins, and Apple will now accept any computer or display for free recycling, regardless of manufacturer.

New iPhone reportedly coming even later

Those pining for a new iPhone suffered through the summer without Apple's customary update. Then came the rumors of a September release. Now they may have to wait even longer for that new iPhone.

The latest report shatters the rumored September release for the new iPhone.

John Paczkowski of AllThingsD says that rumors of a September release are wrong. The September timeframe is based on a report that AT&T has blacked out vacations during the last two weeks of the month for the new iPhone release, but Paczkowski's source says that is misinformation.

His source says look to October instead, but did not reveal any device details.

About that Swype beta for the iPhone …

A few days ago I mentioned an unofficial port of Swype that can be installed on jailbroken iPhones. Since then I've been trying it out, and it has been trying. As beta software should be expected it is not polished and has been a huge compromise. Not only is the dictionary a bit lacking, but it also seems to be a little laggy causing a lot more typing errors than usual. Slowing down seems to help.

So I definitely recommend trying it out for fun or to satisfy curiosity, but keep in mind it is in development.

Type different; Swype for the iPhone,

Many Android users know and love Swype. Instead of pecking at the letters, you drag your finger letter to letter spelling the words.  Once you get the hang of it, Swype can be faster than conventional typing especially the one digit variety.

It is beta and you cant get it unless your phone is rooted or "jailbroken," but for a taste you can see it in the video below.

You can cut to the chase with this link that goes straight to the 49 second mark where the demo appears. The start of the video provides the information for installation for the jailbroken devices.

Hacking your iPad, iPhone doesn't get easier than this

First don't let the ominous term jailbreak scare you. There are plenty of honest hacks worth jailbreaking your phone for. My favorite is a shortcut to my settings. With SBSettings installed from Cydia, in just two gestures  I can toggle Wi-Fi on or off or adjust the brightness. This lets me tuck away the settings icon and place something more valuable on my home screen, like Words With Friends.

iPhoneSchool show just how easy it is.

Will Apple offer $0 iPhone under contract?

Apple's iPhone 3GS can be had for $49 with AT&T, but will the price drop to zero?

AppleInsider reports analyst Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets says Apple is "expected" to offer the device for free alongside the iPhone 5 launch.

Offering a free iPhone 3GS with a contract is a  mostly psychological strategy that could reach out to lower cost consumers.

A free Apple device may seem like far reach, but Apple's upcoming mobile operating system will support the aging iPhone 3GS which does give credence to the idea. The offer could also be used to clear left over 3GS inventory still left on the shelves by then. Apple takes the competition with Android seriously and this could be an aggressive move in the smartphone OS wars.

Previous reports have also claimed Apple will unveil two new iPhones later this year: the iPhone 5 and a second lower spec model. Apple could announce the devices at an August music event allegedly being planned.

$300 titanium iPhone case tests buyers' mettle

Svelte, stylish and made from titanium, CaseMate has dropped a bombshell on the iPhone accessory market.

At a price which would make most wallets shriek, consumers get an "Antennagate" solution that mimics Apple's industrial design. While $300 might seem steep for a case, keep in mind it includes a miniature screwdriver for the minor assembly required by the loose screws that buy it.

There are no specific claims of protection, but given the price it should include damage insurance.

It is compatible with all iPhone 4 models. Better hurry before they sell out. Available here.
