Clash of the Carolinas this Saturday
Submitted by ewarnock on 07/07/2011 - 18:35The fifth annual Clash of the Carolinas all-star soccer games will be played this Saturday on Daniels Island, near Charleston, S.C., where UNC's Farrell Sweeney, an East Chapel Hill alumna, UNC Asheville goalie Dan Jackson (East Chapel Hill '11) and UNC Wilmington midfielder Jamie Dell (Chapel Hill '11) will be on the N.C. teams.
Baseball playoff games on for tonight
Submitted by ewarnock on 05/18/2011 - 13:59East Chapel Hill scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh and won 4-3 Tuesday night at Raleigh Athens Drive. The Wildcats were the only local team to get their NCHSAA baseball playoff game completed.
Chapel Hill suspended play in its game with Union Pines due to heavy rain, and will resume play at 7 p.m. tonight. Carrboro will play at Eastern Randolph at 7 p.m.
East Chapel Hill will next play no earlier than Friday, facing either Durham Jordan or Leesville Road. Those two suspended play last night with Jordan holding a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. They'll resume at 5 p.m today,
East's Griffin wins 4-A golf championship

PINEHURST -- Ben Griffin of East Chapel Hill won a dramatic playoff with Greenville Rose's Andrew Decker on Tuesday to take the individual championship in the 75th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst No. 6.
Griffin won it on the second playoff hole, chipping in to save par on a par four, after the two had finished deadlocked in the regulation 36 holes with 137 totals, five under par.
Andrew Klassing of Charlotte Ardrey Kell was third in the individual standings with a 140. Defending champ Grayson Murray of Raleigh Leesville Road was one of three golfers in a tie for fourth at even par 142, but Carter Jenkins of Leesville won on the first playoff hole to take the fourth spot over Murray and Philip Oweida of Charlotte Myers Park.
The championship was held on a par-71 layout set at 6,537 yards or the NCHSAA event.
Leesville Road held on to capture the team championship with a 292 score on Tuesday for a 577 total, four shots ahead of Myers Park. Ardrey Kell was third with a 593, followed by Raleigh Wakefield and Cary Green Hope. Six of the 12 teams in the field broke 600.
Hocker, Lavenets shoot well in HS Invitational
Submitted by ewarnock on 04/05/2011 - 15:05Riverside junior Michael Hocker II carded a 78 Monday at tricky Treyburn Country Club to tie for sixth in the fifth annual N.C. High School Invitational golf tournament.
Hocker, who plays out of nearby Croasdaile Country Club, carded 38 on the front and 40 after the turn at Treyburn.
Stephen Lavenets Jr. of Northern High School, who was junior co-medalist in last year’s Herald-Sun Golf Classic, tied for 14th with an 81.
Led by NCHSAA 2010 4-A medalist Grayson Murray, Raleigh Leesville Road won the team championship with a total of 313. That was 12 strokes better than runnerup Gastonia Forestview (325). Raleigh Broughton (334) was third, followed by Christ School of Arden (337) and Westchester Academy of High Point (337) to round out the top five.
Trinity School of Durham (354) was 10th.
Murray shot 37-36—73 to win medalist honors Monday.
Burlington freshman William Register, junior Jonathan Diianni of High Point and sophomore Zach Seabolt of Raleigh all tied for second with 77s.
Carrboro leads in Wachovia Conference standings
Submitted by ewarnock on 03/22/2011 - 12:37Carrboro High School holds a top spot in the Wachovia Conference Cup standings after the NCHSAA’s winter season. After a championship in men’s swimming and a runner-up finish in women’s swimming, Carrboro has 84.5 points in the standings for the Carolina 2-A Conference, followed closely behind by Cedar Ridge.
The Wachovia Cup award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual conference. Points are awarded based upon final standings for each sport in each conference.
In the Carolina 2-A, Cedar Ridge finished second in men’s basketball and third in wrestling, and now has 81.5 points. Men’s basketball conference champion Northwood is in third with 77 points. Other schools are N.C. School of Science and Math (73.5), Durham School of the Arts (63), Raleigh Charter (56), South Granville (44), Granville Central (41.5), River Mill (27), Roxboro Community (10).
In the Carolina 3-A, Cardinal Gibbons (55 points) leads the way after a commanding winter performance, taking a title in women’s basketball, finishing second in men’s and women’s swimming and third in wrestling.
Chapel Hill (52) is close behind in second, with a conference crown in men’s basketball and a runner-up finish in wrestling. The wrestling champion, Orange (38.5), is third, also finishing second in women’s basketball. Southern Vance (25), Oxford Webb (24.5) and Northern Vance (22) round out the conference.
Jordan has taken over the lead in the Piedmont Athletic 4-A Conference, passing fall leader East Chapel Hill. Jordan won the PAC-6 championship in men’s basketball and delivered second-place performances in men’s and women’s swimming to earn 60 points. Second-place East Chapel Hill (55.5) swept the PAC-6 swimming championships.
CHHS, East holding top 10 spots in girls lax
Submitted by ewarnock on 03/16/2011 - 16:02The Chapel Hill High School girls’ lacrosse team topped Carrboro 21-13 Tuesday to solidify the Tigers’ place in the early season Top 25.
Haley Wilson led the scoring with 6 goals for CHHS, while Sofie Kennedy scored 5 and Jenna Hornik 4.
At 2-1, CHHS currently is No. 8 in the Laxpower.com power ratings. East Chapel Hill (2-2) is right behind at No. 9. Carrboro is at No. 24.
East Chapel Hill hosts Riverside on Thursday and then Charlotte Myers Park on Saturday. Carrboro will play at Durham Academy on Friday.
CHHS returns to action Monday with a game against Raleigh Broughton.
Horses, teens and $20,000
Submitted by teribb on 03/15/2011 - 05:57The CORRAL Riding Academy raised more than $20,000 at its inaugural Gala Fundraiser held Feb. 19 at the Angus Barn Pavilion in Raleigh, the nonprofit organization announced this past week.
The money, which included more than $3,000 raised in the night’s silent auction, will be used in the treatment of at-risk and adjudicated teenage girls who are paired with rescued horses in the nonprofit organization’s riding and mentoring program.
Most Thursday sports are washed out

The Cedar Ridge High School tennis match at Science and Math is rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday in Durham.
Orange High's indoor track awards have been postponed to 6 p.m. on March 16 in the school cafeteria.
Cedar Ridge’s home softball and baseball games against N.C. Science and Math have been rescheduled for March 21.
The Cedar Ridge lacrosse match at Durham Jordan also has been postponed to March 21.
Orange High’s tennis match with Chapel Hill and soccer match against Person both have been postponed and are not rescheduled at this time.
