RALEIGH – Here’s our rapid reaction after Cardinal Gibbons defeated Chapel Hill 48-42 Saturday afternoon in a Carolina 3-A conference game:
HOW THE GAME WAS WON
The Crusaders were able to create pressure with their full court pressure. Once Cardinal Gibbons grabbed the lead, the Crusaders were able to maintain it with rebounds that allowed them to take more time off the clock late in the fourth quarter and produce second-chance points. Turnovers also became a factor, as the Crusaders forced the Tigers into 18 turnovers in the second half.
TURNING POINT
Cardinal Gibbons spent the majority of halftime figuring out how to attack Chapel Hill’s matchup zone that was followed by half-court traps. At one point, the Crusaders did a nice job of attacking the bucket once they broke the trap. The resulted in forward Ali Glaser, who had 12 points, to get good looks at the basket with just one defender on her.
Three milestones were notched in a 79-27 blowout by Cary Christian's girls basketball team over Kinston Parrott Academy on Friday.
RALEIGH – Here’s our rapid reaction after Millbrook defeated Enloe 48-40 Friday night in a Cap Eight 4-A conference game:
HOW THE GAME WAS WON
This game was close the entire way, but Millbrook center Briana Day was dominant in the second half as she scored 16 of her game-high 24 points to lead the Wildcats to victory. Millbrook has been in close game situations like this before after winning the GlaxoSmithKline Invitation in late December. That really helped the Wildcats pull away from the Eagles late with a 7-0 run.
TURNING POINT
Millbrook had a concerted effort to get Day the ball in the third quarter. Day only missed one shot in the quarter and scored eight points to allow the Wildcats to have a lead to start the third quarter. This was key because guard Katelyn Mitchell handled the ball so well against Enloe’s full-court press that Day had plenty of opportunities to score.
