I'm thinking Mother's Day, Father's Day and those May and June graduations.

Harmless prank or vandalism at Fuquay-Varina High School?

Should 16 Fuquay-Varina High School seniors be barred from their graduation ceremony on Sunday for their activities at the school?

As noted in today's article, the students say it was only a harmless prank when they hopped a school fence on Memorial Day and sprayed chocolate syrup and mustard on the walls of the courtyard and peanut butter on the door knobs. Another sprinkled forks and toiler paper all over the ground.

But Wake County school officials say it was vandalism and trespassing. They say the students also stuck feminine products on the walls, threw eggs and bologna on the walls, wrote profanity in chalk and drew phallic symbols on the walls of the courtyard.

UNC grads to don first (eco-friendly) designer regalia in the country

The Duke-Carolina rivalry is alive and well - even when it comes to eco-friendly graduation gowns. Duke announced last month it will have green regalia for spring commencement. UNC will be going green as well, but with a little more style.

Duke grads to don green gowns at commencement

Graduating students at Duke University's commencement exercises in May will be wearing green for the special occasion. The caps and gowns may appear black in color, but the apparel is made from material produced from recycled plastic bottles.

Smooth running graduations at the Convention Center

As much as some people don't want to give the school system any credit, the graduations have gone fairly smoothly at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Several folks who've been at a graduation say it's gone okay. Parking and traffic haven't been as much as a problem as they could have been.

Still, things weren't perfect.

Saving money on valedictorians

There doesn't appear to be a free lunch for Wake's valedictorians.

The school system has traditionally honored the valedictorians with a luncheon ceremony. But this year, the valedictorians have been invited to attend today's school board meeting to be formally recognized.

The reason for the change, according to school officials, is to save money.

Wake's 2009 valedictorians

Show some love for the 2009 valedictorians from the Wake school system.

Click here for the list of names. N.C. State is the next destination for a plurality of the valedictorians, followed by UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University.

Graduation season starting tonight

Graduation season officially kicks off tonight for the school system.

Southeast Raleigh High, which is on a modified calendar, will be the first at 8 p.m. at the Raleigh Convention Center. The other high schools will hold their ceremonies between June 10-14.

The graduates should be pleased to be inside the air-conditioned Raleigh Convention Center. While the center was built, most Wake graduates sweated it out the past three years at Reynolds Coliseum, which has no air conditioning.

Another thing to monitor is whether Wake avoids a repeat of last year's fiasco with the graduation for Fuquay-Varina High. No explanation was found for why dozens of people were locked out even though they had tickets.
