Wake Forest-Rolesville 20, Leesville Road 14

WAKE FOREST -- Wake Forest-Rolesville’s best player on Friday night made sure to take in the moment. Amid all the cheers and joy that surrounded him, Marcus Jones stayed quiet.

On one knee, Jones watched everyone – his teammates, the students, and the entire coaching staff – rejoice over his best play of the game: A five-yard touchdown run in overtime that gave the Cougars a 20-14 win over second-ranked Leesville Road.

Wake Forest-Rolesville-Millbrook live game updates

Game over: Wake Forest-Rolesville 21, Millbrook 12

Here is why the Cougars are so good and so tough to beat: They wear opponents down in the fourth quarter. The final quarters is usually when sixth-ranked Wake Forest-Rolesville seperates itself from quality opponents. This was true tonight when after the Millbrook scored to pull within two, the Cougars pounded and pounded the ball down Millbrook’s defense. Running back Seth Hall scored a 20-yard touchdown. Once Millbrook couldn’t respond on their next drive, the game was essentially over.

UNC's Thorp responds on football, faculty

On the News & Observer's op-ed page today, UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor writes in some depth about several issues surrounding his university's football program.

Thorp does so in response to this column from last week penned by N&O editor John Drescher, who called out university faculty for largely remaining silent during a recent faculty meeting at which Thorp had discussed the football situation.

As I report today, Thorp's op-ed offers a defense of a massive expansion to Kenan Stadium now getting underway in Chapel Hill, as well as a vote of confidence for Dick Baddour, UNC's athletics director.

UNC trustees meet this morning in Chapel Hill, and the topic of football will likely come up. Stay tuned here and at www.newsobserver.com for more.

Leesville Road 34, Apex 14

Austin Berrios had plenty of incentives for making the game-changing play in the second half of Leesville Road’s 34-14 over Apex.

The Pride struggled early as they were tied with the Cougars at halftime on Thursday night. Berrios didn’t have much to show at that point. Plus, Apex’s Quincy Mangum had returned a kickoff for a 95-yard touchdown.

High school previews in the N&O

High school preseason stories begin on Sunday and continue through Thursday.

Harris arrives in Henderson

Former East Chapel Hill coach Darian Harris has taken over as the head coach at Northern Vance. He welcomed slightly more than 70 players to preseason drills earlier this week.
Harris, who taught business and marketing classes at East Chapel Hill High School, left last spring after some teaching positions were sliced in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro system.
He takes over in Henderson from Cedric Crudup, whose Viking teams over the last four years went 13-32 overall and 7-13 in the Carolina-Nine 3-A Conference. That includes an 8-4 record two years ago,
His new post means Harris will be back in Chapel Hill this fall. His Vikings open Carolina-Nine play Oct. 8 at Orange High and then visit Chapel Hill High School on Oct. 15.

Still time to sign up for a summer sports camp

A week into July already! How summer flies.

The season's summer sports camps are flying by, too, but a few spots remain in camps offered by colleges, professional teams, pro athletes, high schools, grade schools, churches, parks and recreation departments, nonprofit organizations and for-profit enterprises around the area.

The camps cover a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, golf, hockey, jump rope, sailing, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. Multi-sport camps give participants a chance to try a variety of sports without having to pay for several camps.
