This weekend: First Friday at Videri, food trucks at Ray Price

If you are looking for things to do this weekend, here are a couple ideas:

  • If you are planning on attending tonight's First Friday art walk in downtown Raleigh, consider stopping at The Videri Chocolate Factory at 327 W. Davie St. The chocolate shop recently installed a coffee bar serving Stumptown coffee. Tonight, you can stop in and grab an espresso, cappuccino, latte, drip coffee, mochas made using their chocolate or hot sipping chocolate. (I can't wait to try their hot chocolates.)

  • From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Ray Price Harley-Davidson in Raleigh is hosting a food truck rodeo with eight trucks. They are also offering a new rider bootcamp at the same time if you have ever wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle. The trucks include Philly Cheesesteaks, Hibachi Express, Klausie’s Pizza, Captain Poncho’s Tacos, Sweet Stacey Cakes, Groovy Dogs, Italian Ice and possibly Only Burger truck. The dealership is at 1126 S. Saunders St.

More than 50 trucks and beer at Sunday's food truck rodeo in Durham

It seems every time there's a food truck rodeo at Durham Central Park, it is the largest one ever. And they've done it again.

More than 50 trucks will gather from 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday for the Triangle's largest food truck gathering to date. The trucks gather in downtown Durham at the intersection Foster and Hunt streets where the farmers market pavilion is located.

Brian Bottger with Only Burger just confirmed that this event will include beer. Fullsteam Brewery will be selling beer to go with the food on these trucks and many more: Pie Pushers, Stoke & Smoke BBQ, Boxcarr Farms, Big City Sandwiches, Porchetta and Blue Ribbon Delights.

Win two tickets to Oct. 14 food truck event in Durham

Each fall, Durham Central Park offers a series of fundraising dinners called Meals from the Market. The schedule of those events and tickets are now available HERE.

One of those events is a small food truck rodeo called "Trucks from the Market" next Sunday, Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m. Instead of long lines and trucks running out of food, this will be a ticketed event to make sure everyone gets a taste off every truck. So for $50, you get a taste of food from all 13 trucks, 2 Carolina Brewery beers and hopefully a lovely Sunday evening in downtown Durham.

The participating trucks include Only Burger, Pie Pushers, Triangle Raw Foods, Chick-N-Que, Mama Duke's, Sympathy for the Deli, Porchetta, KoKyu BBQ, American Meltdown, Farmhand Foods, Monuts Donuts, The Parlour and Daisy Cakes.

Here's where it gets good for one lucky Mouthful reader: the organizers have offered a pair of tickets for free as a giveaway.

So you know the drill, leave a comment below this post before noon, Thursday, Oct. 11. I will pick a winner at random and arrange for the winner to pick up tickets at the event. Good luck!

Triangle's largest food truck rodeo so far in Durham Sunday

This Sunday will be the Triangle's largest food truck rodeo to date from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in downtown Durham.

About 45 food trucks and carts will gather at Durham Central Park, home of the Durham Farmers' Market at 501 Foster Street.

Organizer Brian Bottger with the Only Burger truck says they have secured a large "quiet" diesel generator to eliminate the single-use generators. Bottger says they think it will reduce the noise level at the event.

The trucks and carts include Sweet Water Ices, Sympathy for the Deli, Pie Pushers and Porchetta, and a couple newer trucks (Philly's Cheesesteaks, Num Num Express).

The event will happen in the parking lot behind Bruegger's. The trucks include Klausie's Pizza, Chirba Chirba Dumpling, Captain Ponchos Taco Truck, Gussy's Greek Street Food, Olde North State BBQ, Big City Sandwiches, Big John's Hot & Spicy (although their Facebook page says they are off the road), Kona Ice and Lumpy's Ice Cream.

In case you missed this week's food truck news

We had two stories about food truck regulations while I was on vacation:

Raleigh is considering relaxing its rules. Go HERE to read that story.

And Durham held a public meeting about its proposed regulations. Go HERE.

Woodard: City not out to 'overregulate' food trucks

Durham City Council members are reassuring food truck lovers that proposed new rules aren’t meant to quash the Bull City’s mobile eateries. (See the rules here.)

The rules go to a public meeting 5:30 p.m. Monday in Durham City Hall. Among other things, trucks would be banned within 100 feet of a restaurant entrance without the restaurant owner’s permission. Second, trucks could be banned around Durham Central Park, including when the Durham Farmers Market meets Wednesdays and Saturdays.

In an email, City Councilman Mike Woodard reassured one constituent “the intent of the proposed ordinance is not to ‘overregulate’ food trucks.” Rather, the city has received some complaints about street vendors, not just food trucks. “This ordinance is our staff's first attempt to address these concerns while not destroying the unique business opportunities and culture that have come about as a result of food trucks,” he said.

Two updates on Durham's proposed food truck rules

The N&O's Mouthful blog has two updates on Durham's proposed food truck rules:

Durham Central Park and Durham Farmers' Market officials say they were as surprised as the food truck owners by the proposal. Go HERE to read that post.

And Durham food truck supporters have started a website to oppose the rules. To read more about that, go to DurhamLovesFood.com.
