Only Burger hosts viewing party for Food Network verdict

Absent some kind of hanging-chad controversy and a Supreme Court intervention, I'm fully expecting Only Burger to have won this Food Network "Great Food Truck Race" online contest when the winner is announced Sunday night.

Though voting was back and forth in the final days, the Durham-based food truck seemed to be in first place in the contest when voting ended last weekend, but there was some back-pedaling later -- presumably because Food Network wants to announce the winner during the finale of "The Great Food Truck" race, which airs Sunday night at 9pm.

Durham's Only Burger wins Food Network contest

Looks like America loves Only Burger! The Durham-based food truck Only Burger seems to have prevailed over Oklahoma City's Big Truck Tacos to win the top spot in Food Network's food truck contest.

The Food Network website took down the leader board section of the contest page showing who finished on top, but Only Burger announced just after midnight on Twitter and Facebook that they were on top in the contest.

Only Burger posted on Facebook: "We did it!!!! We closed out in #1, we'll get the official results tomorrow. For now, here's a word from Only Burger Brian: Durham, friends and family...I love you so much! Tom: Thank you to everybody who supported us, our community, our friends and our family. We couldn't have done it without you! Love you all! Go Only Burger!!!!!"

The winner of the Food Network "Great Food Truck Race" contest receives $10,000 and a chance to compete on the show next season.

UPDATE: Only Burger is still waiting for official word from Food Network, which wants to announce the winner on next week's finale of "Great Food Truck Race."

Durham's Only Burger locked in epic battle for Food Network gig

The Durham-based food truck Only Burger is locked in an epic battle for first place with Oklahoma City's Big Truck Tacos, all for the chance to appear on the next season of Food Network's "Great Food Truck Race."

Online voting will determine who gets a spot on the show, and Only Burger and Big Truck Tacos have been back and forth between first and second place for the last several days.

It looks like it could go down to the wire. You can vote every day and you get 10 votes each day. You can spread the votes out or give all your votes to one truck. Voting ends Friday, September 10. Go here to vote -- look for the Leader Board on the right and click on Only Burger to cast your votes with them. You can also text FT51 to 66789.

Local blood in Food Network's "Restaurant Battle"

Looks like we have another Carolina cook to root for on television.

Born in Valle Crucis and raised in Wilmington and Mebane, aspiring chef Aaron Seelbinder's southern roots and love of good food paid off this spring when he was invited by Food Network to come to New York and participate in their show, "24 Hour Restaurant Battle."

It all started when Aaron's friend Baylor Ferrier landed a spot on the show and producers asked him if there was someone he'd like to open a restaurant with. He immediately thought of Aaron. Food Network contacted Aaron, flew him to New York City, and the rest? Well, the rest we'll have to watch when the show airs tomorrow night.

UNC challenges Food Network's "Dinner: Impossible"

Robert Irvine, the controversial chef of Food Network's "Dinner: Impossible," made a trip to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus back in November to tape an episode of his show.

Irvine's mission for this particular show was provided by the UNC Alumni Association, and it was a good one: to prepare a home-cooked meal for students in just six hours using only those ingredients found in student residence halls.

Did Irvine make a Capt'n Crunch-Ramen Noodle souffle with braised weenies in a Bud Lite reduction? Actually, that's not too far off the mark.

You can see for yourself when the show airs tonight on Food Network at 10pm.

Paula Deen cancels Durham shows

Food Network star Paula Deen has canceled six shows in her Celebrity Chefs Tour, including two shows scheduled for today at Durham's Performing Arts Center.

Apparently there's some dispute regarding the blame for the cancellation of "An Evening with Paula Deen and Family." Deen's camp attributes the cancellation to a payment problem with the show's promoter, but the promoter released a statement insisting Deen has been paid.

What to Watch on Monday: "Unexpected" continues to shine

Damages (10pm, FX) - The name of tonight's episode is "Don't Throw That at the Chicken," so it'll be worth watching just to see why...

Men of a Certain Age (10pm, TNT) - Joe bets $25,000 on a basketball game hoping to make a down payment on a house. And when Owen's father decides to trim his schedule, he asks Marcus to manage the dealership.

One of the "Worst Cooks in America" is from Charlotte

After you watch the Super Chef Battle on the Food Network tonight, don't turn the dial.

Instead, settle in to watch the network's latest competition show "Worst Cooks in America" (10 p.m.), with Charlotte contestant David Summey.

As the name implies, the show features some bad cooks, and that's putting it politely.
