Free Starbucks for you and a friend

Facebook Messenger adds voice

Facebook updated its Messenger app for Android and iOS allowing users to send brief voice messages to their friends on the social networking site. It is a step toward competing with Skype and Google Voice.

Canadian iOS users can even make free calls using Wi-Fi or their cellular data connection with the freshened Messenger app. Usage does of course pull from consumers' monthly data allotment.

Currently U.S. users are limited to sending brief voice messages, but the calling feature offered to Canadian users could cross the border if all goes well according to The Verge.

Facebook's Messenger app is a separate app from the somewhat ubiquitous mobile Facebook app.

To send a voice message in Messenger, select a contact and touch the "+" button on the left of the text field. Select the record voice button. Hold your finger on the red record button and record your message. When you lift your finger from the record button the message is automatically sent. You can cancel though by sliding upward off the record button rather than lifting off of it.

Here is a decent video walk-through.

More states make it illegal for employers to demand Facebook, Twitter password

California and Illinois had laws take effect at the start of 2013 that prohibit employers from demanding passwords for social network accounts of workers and job applicants. The two states join Michigan which enacted a similar law in December. The Michigan law also bans educational institutions from dismissing or refusing to admit students who decline to provide account information.

The practice has become more common. Those needing jobs may feel as if they have little choice but to comply. I'm not sure I'd want to work with a company that would even request my passwords, but does North Carolina need similar law?

These laws do not protect workers from action over an inappropriate status update or tweet. So remember, you are what you tweet.

Businesses find email trumps Facebook for reaching customers

By Sapna Maheshwari and Matt Townsend- Bloomberg News

Even as retailers debate the efficacy of social-media marketing on Facebook and Twitter, they have no doubts about the power of a decades-old technology to drive sales. The killer app is called email.

Retailers as disparate as Williams-Sonoma and Home Depot have become much better at tailoring emails to specific customers rather than the one-size-fits-all blasts that once dominated this type of marketing. Measured by sales per dollar spent, email outperforms social-media advertising 3-to-1, according to the Direct Marketing Association, a trade group founded to provide accurate marketing data. That explains why retailers will send 19 percent more emails this year.
