NCDOT offers real-time emergency information as Hurricane Irene approaches

RALEIGH — As Hurricane Irene nears the North Carolina coast, residents and visitors can rely on NCDOT Mobile to get real-time emergency information right on their smartphones. The N.C. Department of Transportation today updated its web-based application to make it easy to access hurricane evacuation route maps and real-time travel conditions.

State shifts 1,440 from prisons, jails in evacuation areas

Staff writer Anne Blythe reports that state prisons have evacuated 1,300 inmates from Hyde Correctional Institution in Swan Quarter and Tyrrell Prison Work Farm in Columbia.

In addition, some 140 inmates from county jails in Beaufort and Dare counties were moved with the state prison inmates.

Buses and drivers are on hand, according to prison administrators, for further evacuations if necessary.
