Heine, Quick make commitments

Today is National Signing Day, when high school athletes from fall sports make their official commitments to college teams.

While several high school seniors who play Olympic sports are signing as well, much of the emphasis for many schools is placed on football programs.

Locally, offensive lineman William Heine of East Chapel Hill has committed to Georgetown and Chapel Hill's R.J. Quick has signed on for Winston-Salem State.

Heine, a 6-5, 280-pound senior played at right tackle for East, helping to protect record-setting QB Drew Davis in coach  Bill Renner's "five-wide" offense. Heine will be joining his brother James at Georgetown, who's a pitcher for the Hoyas' baseball team.

Quick, not the biggest Tiger at  5-11, 180 pounds, was still one of the biggest guns as a top receiver for coach Issac Marsh as CHHS went 10-3 last season. He was also one of the quickest, no pun intended, with 4.5 speed.

The University of North Carolina is announcing its commitments — including Phil Williamson of Jordan — from the Class of 2012 this afternoon. See UNC Now (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/uncnow) for the latest on Carolina's recruits, and ACC Now (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/home) for updates on Duke and N.C. State.

Due to rain and a soggy field at Linny Wrenn Stadium, East Chapel Hill's Piedmont Athletic 4-A Conference football game at Durham Riverside High School has been rescheduled for Monday evening at 7 p.m.

ECH's Davis passes for 486 yards

East Chapel Hill senior quarterback Drew Davis, who set the state record with 43 completions a week ago, almost matched his total Friday night in a 69-42 victory over Durham Jordan.

Chapel Hill. Carrboro open with wins

Chapel Hill withstood the 239 yards rushing mounted by South Granville's Josh Bailey and opened the season with a 19-13 win Friday night on the road. In other games involving area teams, both played in-county, Carrboro out-lasted Central Davidson 47-36 and Orange looked strong in downing Person 42-14. East Chapel Hill lost to East Wake 28-21. Northwood was stung by East Duplin, 56-6, and Cedar Ridge fell 57-37 at Eastern Alamance.

Tigers, 'Cats will meet early

Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill will stage an earlier than usual version of their intense soccer rivalry Thursday night in the finals of The O.C. invitational tournament.

The cross-town rivals will play at 8 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Carrboro High School in The O.C.'s championship game. That match will be preceded by Carrboro hosting Jordan-Matthews in the third-place consolation final at 6 p.m.

Over at Culbreth Middle School, Cedar Ridge will play Cary Academy at 5 p.m. Thursday, and Northwood will face Western Alamance at 7 p.m.

The O.C. junior varsity championship will be played tonight at 6 p.m. at Culbreth, featuring Carrboro against Chapel Hill.

In Tuesday's championship semifinals for the varsities, Chapel Hill fought off the talented and still under-rated visitors from Jordan-Matthews for a 4-3 win, and East Chapel Hill advanced to the title game after winning a penalty kick shootout with Carrboro.

The Wildcats and Jaguars were tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime, and then were still tied through one round of penalty kicks before East won the shootout in sudden death, 7-6.

Leesville Road, East's Griffin wins 4-A golf

This just in from the NCHSAA's Rick Strunk:

PINEHURST -- Ben Griffin of East Chapel Hill won a dramatic playoff with Greenville Rose's Andrew Decker on Tuesday to take the individual championship in the 75th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst No. 6.

More on this story will be in tomorrow's N&O, as Nate Taylor was on the scene.

East's Griffin wins 4-A golf championship

PINEHURST -- Ben Griffin of East Chapel Hill won a dramatic playoff with Greenville Rose's Andrew Decker on Tuesday to take the individual championship in the 75th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst No. 6.

Griffin won it on the second playoff hole, chipping in to save par on a par four, after the two had finished deadlocked in the regulation 36 holes with 137 totals, five under par.

Andrew Klassing of Charlotte Ardrey Kell was third in the individual standings with a 140. Defending champ Grayson Murray of Raleigh Leesville Road was one of three golfers in a tie for fourth at even par 142, but Carter Jenkins of Leesville won on the first playoff hole to take the fourth spot over Murray and Philip Oweida of Charlotte Myers Park.
The championship was held on a par-71 layout set at 6,537 yards or the NCHSAA event.

Leesville Road held on to capture the team championship with a 292 score on Tuesday for a 577 total, four shots ahead of Myers Park. Ardrey Kell was third with a 593, followed by Raleigh Wakefield and Cary Green Hope. Six of the 12 teams in the field broke 600.

Wildcat lacrosse goes blogging

The East Chapel Hill High School lacrosse team’s web page got a face-lift recently from Don Wittenkind.

Among the new features, Wittenkind will be blogging and feeding live updates from Wildcat Stadium to the page during Friday’s second-round NCHSAA playoff double-header.

The East girls host No. 1 Apex at 5 p.m. Friday, and the boys host Middle Creek at 7 p.m.

East lacrosse’s home page, fittingly enough, is www.eastlacrosse.com.

East postpones games

Last night's torrential rain storm has left area fields sodden and unplayable, so East Chapel Hill High School is calling off this afternoon's baseball game with Leesville Road.

Instead, the Wildcats will host Leesville Road's varsity at 5 p.m. Thursday. The JV game with Cardinal Gibbons, originally planned for today, will not be rescheduled.

East Chapel Hill returns to conference play on Friday, when  it hosts Hillside at 4:30 p.m.
