Wednesday deals (May 16-22)

The big grocery store news this week, of course, is Triples at Harris Teeter. Check my separate Triples post to read my incredibly long list of good deals, including more than a dozen freebies and more than 30 other items under $1.

Beyond Triples, you can score some nice produce deals at Lowes Foods, Food Lion and Aldi this week. Food Lion also has a great deal on whole chicken fryers for just 79 cents a pound. With the help of coupons, Lowes Foods has a great deal on Pepsi 12 packs and Lance Crackers.

For easier price comparisons, I've also added the Kroger deals from Sunday to the bottom of the list.

Keep reading for all the details and coupon match-ups.

Update: Five coupon inserts coming in Sunday's N&O!

Big news for coupon clippers this weekend.

Look for four regular coupon inserts -- one Smart Source, one Red Plum, the May P&G BrandSaver  and the Pepsi Moments to Save -- in this Sunday's home-delivered Final Edition of The News & Observer.

Also be on the look out for a bonus Target insert containing 21 coupons good only at Target.

After a few one-insert weeks, it's a bit of a thrill to have a plethora of coupons from which to pick and choose.

Q&A with the Centsible Saver

Q&A with the Centsible Saver is an occasional feature on the blog. If you have a question for a future Q&A, leave it at the bottom of this post or email it to adunn@newsobserver.com. Ask me anything about coupons, rebates, saving money and living the frugal life.

This time around I've got questions about online coupon-printing sites, the liklihood of Super Double or Triple coupon promotions at Kroger and the best way to get multiple copies of coupons for items you regularly purchase.

Read on for the answers.....

Harris Teeter AND Lowes Foods to offer Super Doubles this week

Big news in the coupon world: Both Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods will be launching Super Double coupon events this week starting Wednesday.

Coupons 101: Rules of the road for cashing in at Triangle stores

If you want to maximize your savings with coupons, it's important to know the rules of the road at the supermarkets and drugstores you frequent.

Unfortunately, the rules are different everywhere you shop, which can make bargain hunting a challenge.

At some stores, a 75-cent coupon is routinely worth $1.50 and can be valued as high as $2.25 during a special coupon event. At other stores, that same 75-cent coupon is worth just 75 cents.

Some supermarket chains will accept coupons issued by competitors. Don't like Store X? No problem. Store Y and Z will happily redeem a Store X coupon for you.

And at one major national retailer, the store will pay you if your coupon value exceeds the price of the item you're buying. You read that correctly. If the item you're buying is $1.50 and your coupon is for $2, the cashier will hand you the difference in cash. There's nothing shady or extreme about it. I promise. It's all spelled out in the retailer's official coupon policy.

Why all the coupon fine print? A lot of retailers have tightened up their policies in recent years to keep in check those couponers who have adopted the extreme methods depicted on the controversial TLC show "Extreme Couponing."

At the same time, other retailers have actually loosened their coupon policies, hoping to lure customers looking for ways to trim their budgets during tough economic times.

In the Triangle, coupon shoppers enjoy coupon policies among the most generous in the country, thanks to lots of supermarket competition. Those little slips of paper can save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars over the course of a year so it's well worth the effort to study up a bit.

For coupon newbies -- and those who need a refresher course - here's a roundup of the basic coupon guidelines at the major retailers in the Triangle, including all the information on the store that will pay you to shop with coupons.

Wednesday deals (March 7-13)

This week's supermarket headlines definitely belong to Food Lion, which is offering its first-ever double-coupon event in the Triangle. Click here to find out about those deals.
But at Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods, where double coupons are the norm, there are some equally good bargains to be had -- if not better deals in some cases.
How about a dozen eggs for 24 cents? Or a large jar of peanut butter for 60 cents?

Lowes Foods will offer more Super Doubles promotions

The folks at Lowes Foods, who offered its first-ever Super Doubles last month, say they will offer the special coupon promotion again.

"We will do it in the future but I don't have any specifics," said Lisa Selip, a spokeswoman for the Winston Salem-based Lowes Foods.

"Obviously, it drove traffic to the stores and customer response was very positive," Selip said.

Wednesday deals (Feb. 29-March 6)

There's no shortage of bargains to go after at the grocery stores this week with impressive deals at each of the stores -- many of them under $1. How do you like the sound of eggs for 97 cents a dozen, grapes for 97 cents a pound, toothpaste for a quarter, and a one-pound package of bacon for 49 cents?
In addition, Harris Teeter has got dozens of BOGO sales going on and with any luck, this weekend's coupons will match up with some of those sales. And Lowes Foods has launched an enhanced Fuel Rewards program that you'll want to take a look at. Aldi has its usual assortment of bargain-priced produce. And all of the stores have sales this week on fresh or frozen chicken.

The power of coupons: 89% saved at Harris Teeter Super Doubles

I made a quick trip to my Harris Teeter in Apex this afternoon to take advantage of its Super Doubles promotion. Here's how I did:

I bought $102.31 worth of groceries.

After coupons: I paid $12.39. That's an 89 percent savings.

I love to show folks how I did at a special couponing event like Super Doubles, not to brag, but to illustrate the power of coupons to save money.

Here's a breakdown of how the savings added up:
