Harris Teeter launches new version of mobile shopping app

Harris Teeter launched a new version of its mobile shopping app this week.

Similar to the old version, you can shop the sales circular on your smartphone to create a personalized shopping list. But you can now access your e-VIC offers and save digital coupons to your loyalty card through your phone.

The new app also allows you to scan the barcode of an item in your kitchen pantry and add it to your shopping list, transfer or renew a prescription and create your own personal list of favorites that you buy on a regular basis.

Wednesday deals (May 9-15)

This post has been updated with Aldi deals.

There are some fantastic deals to be had at Triangle grocery stores this week -- with and without coupons.

At Harris Teeter, you can stock up on basics -- no coupons required. Milk is $2.77 per gallon, eggs are 97 cents per dozen and whole chicken fryers are just 77 cents per pound. And, of course, there's no need for coupons to pick up the produce bargains at Aldi, which include 29-cent cucumbers this week.

With a little coupon magic, there are deals on Pure Protein bars, 2 liters of Sun Drop soda, Ken's salad dressing, Ball Park Franks and buns, Nutella and Snackwell's snack bars.

And then there are the unadvertised killer deals: Dove ice cream bars for as little as $1.24 per box and jugs of Xtra laundry detergent for $1.49.

Don't like that brand? All laundry detergent is just $1.99 a jug at Harris Teeter and $2 a jug at Lowes Foods.

Also noteworthy is Lowes Foods' Mother's Day special, its brand-new set of in-store coupons and its fuel rewards deal when you purchase participating $25 gift cards.

Read on for the very best deals at Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, Food Lion and Aldi. And please add any good deals you spot so we can all save even more.

For easier price comparisons, I've also added the Kroger deals from Sunday to the bottom of the list.

New SavingStar coupons on Cheerios, Pillsbury rolls, more

If you're an old pro at couponing but have steered clear of digital coupons, now is a great time to try them out on SavingStar.com.

The national e-coupon site just added several new offers that I've never seen on SavingStar before, including two coupons for Cheerios and one for Pillsbury rolls.

I like SavingStar for several reasons:

New month = new printable, digital coupons

It's March 1 and if you're a couponer that means you've got work to do.

The start of a new month is always a great time to:

*Visit the growing number of online coupon sites, which often issue new coupons for the new month.

*Reload your digital coupons. The first of the month is a good time to check the digital coupon sites and add any new offers available.

Read on for clickable links to some of my favorite printable and digital coupon sites plus handy reminders on other monthly coupon chores.

Raleigh named 5th most frugal city in U.S.

The city of Raleigh has a new distinction as home to some of the most frugal-minded folks in America.

According to a study released this week by the website Coupons.com, the capital city ranks among the top five most frugal cities in the United States for 2011.

Atlanta was named the No. 1 most frugal city, followed by Tampa, St. Louis, Cincinnati and then Raleigh.

This year's No. 5 spot was a big move up in the frugal standings for Raleigh, which ranked as the 10th most frugal city in the 2010 survey,  said Patrick Crisp, a spokesman for Coupons.com, which is based in Mountain View, Calif.

Dieting in a digital age: Part I: food

With healthy, low-calorie meals behind me, can I justify having Bojangles' once week because I was "a good girl"? Probably not. Like all things in life, you have to pick your battles. I'm going to hold myself to one Fast-Food binge every 4-6 weeks, both for dietary reasons as well as sustainability and animal welfare concerns.
