Tips for small business owners who want to offer a daily deal

A successful daily deal promotion requires business owners to determine the purpose of the deal, evaluate the rewards and risks, and prepare for the execution, according to Jeremy Sisk, president of Xperience4Higher, a Durham marketing firm focusing on small businesses.

Here are some expanded tips from Sisk on key daily deal decisions, which include:

Aisle50, the new site that is partnering with Lowes Foods to offer a deal a day on a grocery item, is up and running today after technical problems delayed Monday's launch.

Its inaugural deal - a 50 percent discount on a 32-ounce tub of Chobani Greek yogurt, which regularly sells for $5.79 - is available here.

Report to Aisle50 for the grocery deal of the day

In the increasingly crowded world of daily deal sites, Aisle50.com is scheduled to launch on Monday morning.

Instead of offering up teeth whitening sessions or horseback riding lessons, Aisle50 will be selling groceries at an average discount of 50 percent off retail price.

“It’s stuff everybody uses at a store you already shop at,” said Christopher Steiner, 34, one of the three founders of the Silicon Valley startup, believed to be the first daily deal site in the country exclusively selling groceries.

Aisle50, which eventually plans to go nationwide, is launching in North Carolina and South Carolina in a partnership with Winston Salem-based Lowes Foods.

Amazon goes local with a daily deal

Amazon.com, the behemoth online retailer, is getting into the local daily deals business.

It launched this week in the Raleigh area, the ninth city where it is offering local deals on everything from restaurants to spas and events. The average savings, AmazonLocal said, is 60 percent off regular prices.

Click here to check out the Raleigh site, which launched Thursday with a golfing deal at  Keith Hills Golf Club. Today’s deal is $50 for $100 towards Sapphire Teeth Whitening at Sloop Dentistry.

Amazon is counting on its name recognition and customer base to succeed in the daily deal industry, which has exploded since the introduction of Groupon in late 2008.
