Bike ride will benefit Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation

 

Registration has opened for the second annual Five-O Memorial Bike Ride scheduled for Aug. 20 in North Raleigh.
 
The fundraiser for the Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation will start at 7 a.m. at Trek Bicycles of Raleigh, located at 10911 Raven Ridge Road. 

Rugby team seeks travel help, plus news from Triangle golf, badminton, basketball and cycling

The Raleigh Vipers, the Raleigh Rugby Football Club’s Division 1 men’s team, is trying to raise $3,000 to help with travel and lodging expenses when the team competes in the Division I playoffs in Boston, starting with an April 30 game against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

State Games of North Carolina start this week

More than 14,000 amateur athletes of all ages - including many from the Triangle - are expected to converge in and around Charlotte for the Powerade State Games of North Carolina.

Opening ceremonies take place at 8 p.m. Friday at the Paladium at Carowinds theme park, and competition ends June 27.

The Olympic-style festival will include a variety of age and skill levels in baseball, basketball, BMX, cycling criterium , disc golf, fencing, figure skating, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, karate, lacrosse, mountain biking, soccer, softball, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, track and field and wrestling.

A training-wheels tax break for biking to work

Starting in January, biking to work could qualify you for a modest tax break (Road Worrier: "$700 billion plan offers tidbits to bike commuters").

The IRS has not yet announced rules for the addition of bicycling to what employers call qualified transportation fringe benefits programs. These programs already include (more genereous) tax breaks to defray employee costs for transit passes, vanpool fees and parking bills.

The League of American Bicyclists promises to post updates as details become available. Stay tuned.

Just our way of reminding you that Opening Ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics are Friday, with competition commencing Saturday in road cycling, fencing, judo, shooting (shooting?) and weightlifting. No word on when the rodent rowing competition begins.
