Lowes Foods will offer more Super Doubles promotions

The folks at Lowes Foods, who offered its first-ever Super Doubles last month, say they will offer the special coupon promotion again.

"We will do it in the future but I don't have any specifics," said Lisa Selip, a spokeswoman for the Winston Salem-based Lowes Foods.

"Obviously, it drove traffic to the stores and customer response was very positive," Selip said.

New month = new printable, digital coupons

It's March 1 and if you're a couponer that means you've got work to do.

The start of a new month is always a great time to:

*Visit the growing number of online coupon sites, which often issue new coupons for the new month.

*Reload your digital coupons. The first of the month is a good time to check the digital coupon sites and add any new offers available.

Wednesday deals (Feb. 29-March 6)

There's no shortage of bargains to go after at the grocery stores this week with impressive deals at each of the stores -- many of them under $1. How do you like the sound of eggs for 97 cents a dozen, grapes for 97 cents a pound, toothpaste for a quarter, and a one-pound package of bacon for 49 cents?
In addition, Harris Teeter has got dozens of BOGO sales going on and with any luck, this weekend's coupons will match up with some of those sales. And Lowes Foods has launched an enhanced Fuel Rewards program that you'll want to take a look at. Aldi has its usual assortment of bargain-priced produce. And all of the stores have sales this week on fresh or frozen chicken.

Read on for all the very best deals at Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, Food Lion, Aldi and Kroger. For easier comparison, I've included Sunday's Kroger deals at the bottom of the post.

Sunday deals are up (Feb. 26-March 3)

Candy and gum deals are plentiful this week as the drugstores start gearing up for Easter sales. Match them up with Hershey's, Nestle, Wonka and Mars coupons and score even better deals.
The drugstores are also offering plenty of freebies to choose from -- Walgreens alone offers eight free items. Also at Walgreens, you'll find a super deal on milk at just $2.79 per gallon, which beats the current deal at Lowes Foods. And don't forget to check out the deals at Kroger, which has excellent buys on frozen entrees, produce and split chicken breasts.

Keep reading for all the very best deals of the week at CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Kerr Drug and Kroger. And please list any deals you find in the comments section so we can all save even more.
(And remember, if you haven't done your Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods or Food Lion shopping for the week yet, you can find those deals here. Prices are good through Tuesday, Feb. 28)

We have a winner.....in the coupon/rebate giveaway

Thanks to everyone who entered this week's giveaway for an envelope full of coupons and mail-in rebates.

And thanks so very much for all your kind words. It's great to hear everyone is saving big at the grocery and drug stores!

Several of you asked questions, too. I'll handle those in an upcoming Q and A post so watch for that.

Now on to the winner: It's goldensx2.

As soon as I get your contact information, I'll mail out the coupons and rebates.

What NOT to buy at the grocery store

I'm a huge advocate of using coupons to save money. It's my job, of course, but I also go home and practice what I teach. I clip paper coupons, load digital coupons  onto my store loyalty cards and match coupons to sales to make our money stretch even farther.

But coupons are only one way to save money. If you really want to live the frugal life -- or circumstances are requiring a more frugal lifestyle -- take a good hard look at what you're putting in your grocery cart.

Would your purchases pass "the grandma test?"

In other words, would your grandmother or great-grandmother have spent her precious household money on some of the items in your cart -- or even recognize them?

Wednesday deals (Feb. 22-28)

Among the grocery store headlines this week: Cheap milk, a stock-up price on frozen veggies, a $1 sale and store-brand specials galore. There's even a chance to win a year's supply of FREE milk.

Keep reading for all the details and a roundup of the very best deals at each store. I've included Sunday's Kroger deals at the end of the list to making comparison shopping easier for you.

Happy bargain hunting! And if you find a deal while you're out and about, please share it in the comments section. That way, we can all save even more.

New Sunday coupons = new deals at Harris Teeter

I'm sure I'm not the only one who was hoping for three or four coupon inserts this Sunday to go with Harris Teeter's Super Doubles promo.

But even with just one new Red Plum insert today, there are a handful of coupon match-ups worth noting:

Database updated with Sunday's new coupons

The News & Observer's  coupon database has been updated with all of today's new coupons.

This Sunday's home-delivered Final Edition of The News & Observer contains one Red Plum insert with 40 coupons and a single coupon for South Beach Diet bars in the Parade magazine. The face value of the coupons is about $72.

That's before you double the first coupon, of course, which we have the opportunity to do every day of the week at Kroger, Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods -- not to mention Super Doubles at Harris Teeter, which is ongoing this week.

The power of coupons: 89% saved at Harris Teeter Super Doubles

I made a quick trip to my Harris Teeter in Apex this afternoon to take advantage of its Super Doubles promotion. Here's how I did:

I bought $102.31 worth of groceries.

After coupons: I paid $12.39. That's an 89 percent savings.

I love to show folks how I did at a special couponing event like Super Doubles, not to brag, but to illustrate the power of coupons to save money.

Here's a breakdown of how the savings added up:
