Wednesday deals (May 2-8)

It's Cinco de Mayo this Saturday so the grocery stores are loaded with sales on everything to throw a party. There are deals on chips and salsa, grilling meats, taco kits, tortillas and black beans -- just to name a few.

You can score FREE Grande tortilla chips with a coupon at Lowes Foods, Mission tortillas for $1 after coupon at Harris Teeter, and tons of great produce deals at Aldi, Lowes Foods and Food Lion.

And if you need soft drinks for your weekend get-togethers, Lowes Foods also has a stellar deal on Pepsi products.

Who says throwing a party has to be expensive?

Read on for the very best deals at Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, Food Lion and Aldi. And please add any good deals you spot so we can all save even more.

For easier price comparisons, I've also added the Kroger deals from Sunday to the bottom of the list.

UPDATED: Send your extra coupons to the military

This post has been updated.

It's the start of a new month, which means it's time to organize your coupons.

After you clip, sort and file, coupon shoppers are typically left with a pile of expired coupons and another stack of coupons that are still current but for products they'll never buy.

Before you toss them into your trash or recycle bins, consider shipping them to military families. Your efforts just might help the families of soldiers serving as nearby as Fort Bragg.

While the expired coupons can be used by military personnel shopping on bases overseas, your unwanted current coupons can be sent to soldiers and their families serving on bases in the United States.

Update: Five coupon inserts coming in Sunday's N&O!

Big news for coupon clippers this weekend.

Look for four regular coupon inserts -- one Smart Source, one Red Plum, the May P&G BrandSaver  and the Pepsi Moments to Save -- in this Sunday's home-delivered Final Edition of The News & Observer.

Also be on the look out for a bonus Target insert containing 21 coupons good only at Target.

After a few one-insert weeks, it's a bit of a thrill to have a plethora of coupons from which to pick and choose.

Q&A with the Centsible Saver

Q&A with the Centsible Saver is an occasional feature on the blog. If you have a question for a future Q&A, leave it at the bottom of this post or email it to adunn@newsobserver.com. Ask me anything about coupons, rebates, saving money and living the frugal life.

This time around I've got questions about online coupon-printing sites, the liklihood of Super Double or Triple coupon promotions at Kroger and the best way to get multiple copies of coupons for items you regularly purchase.

Reminder: Enter to win Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods gift cards

A friendly reminder: You still have time to enter to win $10 gift cards to Lowes Foods and Harris Teeter.

I'll be picking two winners from among those of you who leave comments about your Super Doubles shopping experiences.

One reader will win a $10 card to Lowes Foods and a second reader will receive a $10 card to Harris Teeter.

Tell me how much you saved, relate a funny story or vent about empty shelves. Your comment is your entry to win.

Super Doubles ends at both stores at midnight Tuesday and so will this giveaway. I'll pick two winners at random and post the names Wednesday morning.

Leave your comments on the original post HERE.

Sunday deals are up (April 22-28)

This week's Sunday circulars contain some stellar deals: milk for under $3 a gallon at Kroger and Walgreens, a steal of a deal on olive oil at CVS, good produce prices at Kroger and bargain prices on Kellogg's cereals at Rite Aid.
But my favorite deal of the week is at CVS, where the store will actually pay YOU to buy greeting cards.
Read on for all the very best deals at CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Kroger.  And, as always, please post any great deals you spot so we can all save more.

We have two winners in our McDonald's giveaway

Thanks to everyone who entered to win the McDonald's giveaway by offering up tips on how to save money while still indulging in a little fast food every now and then.

Coupons were a popular method. No surprise there. And more than a few people mentioned sharing meals to cut the cost and the calories. I like how you folks think!

I also liked the suggestion to skip the sodas and drink water instead. That's something we in the Centsible Saver household do.

As another reader suggested, we also sometimes bring our fast food home and supplement the meal with items out of the pantry.

Before we get to the winners, here are some other good solid tips:

Tell us your Super Doubles stories for the chance to win a grocery gift card

Here's your chance to tell us how you did at Super Doubles. Go ahead and brag!

Your comment might even win you a gift card.

I'll be giving away two gift cards. One reader will win a $10 card to Lowes Foods and a second reader will receive a $10 card to Harris Teeter.

So fire away.

Wednesday deals (April 18-24)

Dueling Super Double coupon events dominate the grocery deals this week. Both Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods are offering special one-week promotions that double the value of coupons up to $1.98 in face value.

Beyond Super Doubles, it's a light week for deals, though there are a few bargains worth an extra trip to the store.

Among the deals that caught my eye:

  • Milk for $2.69 per gallon at Aldi!
  • Store-brand bacon for $1.79 at Lowes Foods.
  • Store-brand ice cream BOGO at Harris Teeter.
  • 80% lean ground beef for $2.49 a pound at Harris Teeter.
  • Split chicken breasts for 99 cents a pound at Lowes Foods.
  • Deli turkey breast for $3.99 a pound at Food Lion.
  • Sweet corn for 19 cents an ear at Kroger.

Read on for all the highlights. For easy comparison, I've also included Sunday's Kroger deals at the bottom of the post.

As always, feel free to add any great deals you spot while you're out and about shopping. That way, we can all save more.

UPDATED: Lowes Foods Super Doubles good deals list

Here's a good deals list for the Super Double coupon event at Lowes Foods, which begins Wednesday and runs through April 24 -- the exact same time that rival Harris Teeter is offering Super Doubles.

After doing a little price checking online and walking the aisles of my local Lowes Foods in Apex to verify sale dates, I've added some unadvertised deals and sales that continue from last week.

There are lots of freebies and under-$1 bargains to snag.
