Resolve to make your life a little greener

Do you want to lessen your impact on the environment? No matter your living situation, there's a little something all of us can do to be a bit greener in 2012. Just adopting one new green habit can make a difference. Here are some tips to help get you started:

Get started composting with Biocycle's Find a Composter

Do you compost? If you don't, do you even know where to begin? Then take a trip over to BioCycle's findacomposter.com website and find out how to get started.

Raleigh, Wake to host one-day compost bin sale

Raleigh Recycling and Wake County are sponsoring a one-day compost bin sale on May 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mulch ado about Compost Awareness Week

As a gardener, I love seeing the rich, black humus that comes out of my composter. My lettuce and tomatoes love it too. Compost Awareness Week, May 2-8, is a great time to set up a backyard bin and start recycling your kitchen and yard waste. Your soil will thank you.

Here are some tips for setting up a backyard pile or bin.

If you live in Cary, you can also pick up some free compost on Saturday, courtesy of the town.

See what all the crowing is about

The Hen-side the Beltine Tour d'Coop is almost upon us.

Now in its fifth year, the event continues to grow as more people become inspired to keep a few chickens in their backyard.
See how it's done, get pointers, hold some chicks and check out some cool coop architecture at this year's tour. Its Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine.

Kids love it but please don't bring pets. Admission is non-perishable food or a cash donation for Raleigh Urban Ministries; 100 percent of everything collected goes to the nonprofit which provides food, medicine, transitional housing and medical care to close to 20,000 families and individuals in Wake County every year.

Find out where to get tickets and check out who's on this year's tour here.
