N.C. man stars in Super Bowl commercial

An aspiring actor from Goldsboro could have an audience of 250 million people on Super Bowl Sunday. But he needs your help.

Jason Walston (right), a 2007 Elon University graduate, is featured in one of the top five commercials – out of more than 6,000 consumer-submitted entries – for Doritos’ sixth annual “Crash the Super Bowl” contest. The top two vote-getters will be aired during the Feb. 5’s Super Bowl broadcast on NBC. Those are determined by online voting.

The commercial, called “Hot Wild Girls,” was produced by Brad Scott and Nate Watkin of Denver. In the ad, an actor shows off the power of his smartphone by asking for things like Doritos, which suddenly appear (our Tech Junkie blog has video). Walston’s character then asks for “three hot wild girls,” but the phone misinterprets his request and hilarity ensues.

Another local vying for Super Bowl commercial spot

Looks like another local is hoping for fame and fortune via a Super Bowl commercial contest (Last year a Raleigh group won $650k for their Doritos commercial). Read more about Cary resident Kurt Squiers over at David Menconi's On the Beat blog.

Super Bowl ad with Best Engineering triumph | Budweiser: Bridge

A story of human triumph over disaster. Teamwork and engineering save the day.

Super Bowl tech ad with worst acting | Motorola: Megan Fox

Motorola managed to get our pick for the tech pitch with the worst acting. Maybe its my bias against Motoblur. Maybe Fox just has not found the right director yet? I'm sure this one will still be popular though.

Super Bowl's most humorous tech ad | kgb: Sumo

Its funny and gets the message across without sex appeal...definitely without sex appeal.

Super Bowl tech ad with best visuals | Vizio: Forge

TV maker uses graphical wizardry to shift comsumer opinion of Vizio from bargain brand to upmarket.

The Letterman-Leno-Oprah Super Bowl ad

One of the most bizarre Super Bowl ads so far features David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Oprah Winfrey sitting together on a sofa as Letterman complains that it's the worst Super Bowl party ever.

And yes, they were all three together for the taping in the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York. Apparently, Leno had to sneak into the theater in disguise to preserve the secrecy of the taping, which was described as cordial.

"Oh no! Yer tire's all flat and junk!" Yep. That talking pothole is from NC.

That's right, the voice of that hilarious talking pothole from the Geico commercial belongs to voiceover actress Dayci Brookshire, who grew up in Asheville (till she was 10 years old) and attended UNC-Chapel Hill.

She currently lives in New York.

Brookshire recently gave an interview to sports radio's "The Ticket," and you can listen to it here. And she was nominated for a Bobby Award for the commercial.

Roy, K get their 'Guitar Hero' on

Presented without comment, Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski's new commercial. There's also ESPN's look at the commercial, which also features Rick Pitino and Bobby Knight.

Kobe, A-Rod, Tony Hawk and Phelps rock it out

There are only a few commercials actually worth sitting through (I still like the MAC/PC ads and that baby schilling for E*Trade). This one for Guitar Hero is fun. Look for Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, Michael Phelps, and Tony Hawk. Kobe really commits.
