Fedora hopes to defy UNC trend

If all goes as planned, Larry Fedora will make his UNC coaching debut on Sept. 1, 2012 against Elon in Kenan Stadium.

That game will mark the start of what should be an easy non-ACC schedule. The Tar Heels are slated to host ECU on Sept. 22 and Idaho on Sept. 29. The most difficult non-leaguer likely will be a Sept. 15 trip to Louisville.

Duke's defense gets exposed by Buckeyes

Duke’s Austin Rivers, a shoot-first guard, doesn’t play like his father, now-Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

But here’s a trait they share: Both have a blunt, analytical way of dissecting a loss.

Freshman Austin used the word “embarrassing’’ frequently in describing an 85-63 loss to Ohio State Tuesday night. To Rivers, the Blue Devils didn’t just lose their first game, they lost their identity.

Tudor: Young Yaz, Vandy a test for Heels’ hurling

Hot North Carolina pitching will face equally hot Vanderbilt hitting in the opening College World Series game for the two teams this weekend.

The Tar Heels (50-14) have been led by pitchers Patrick Johnson (13-1) and Kent Emanuel (8-1) through Regional and Super Regional play.

Tudor: Heels-Pack checklist

A short list of priority points to keep in mind for Wednesday's North Carolina at N.C. State basketball game (9 p.m.) in the RBC Center.

Carolina, 20-6 overall, 10-2 ACC after Saturday's 48-46 win over Boston College, won the first meeting of the season, 84-64 on Jan. 29 in Chapel Hill.

The Wolfpack (14-12, 4-8) is coming off an 87-80 loss at Maryland on Sunday.

Tudor: Shooting still a Pack concern

Rejuvenated N.C. State takes a two-game ACC winning streak to Maryland on Sunday (5:30 p.m., FSN).

The downside for the Wolfpack is errant shooting, starting with freshman guards Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown.

Triangle is nation's #2 brain magnet

The Triangle, a perennial front-runner in popularity rankings, has won another plaudit. Forbes magazine said today we're the nation's #2 brain magnet.

That's to say, the Raleigh-Durham-Cary metro area rates highly in terms of the number of college grads we've gained in recent years, when compared to the region's population aged 25 or more.

Forbes' finding is in keeping with other surveys that rank this area highly in terms of livability, affordability and other desirable traits.

Tudor: Pack nears historic low

Eight games and the ACC Tournament remain, but N.C. State is flirting with perhaps its most disappointing basketball season ever.

Heels escape snowstorm

North Carolina’s basketball team first got past Boston College, then the huge northeast snowstorm Tuesday night.

Carolina’s charter flight was able to depart an airport near Bedford, Mass. about two hours after a 106-74 win over the Eagles in Chestnut Hill.

The plane arrived at Raleigh-Durham Airport at about 3 a.m. Wednesday, according to the UNC sports information department.

The Heels (16-5 overall, 6-1 ACC) have today off and do not play again until Sunday at 2 p.m. against Florida State (16-6, 6-2) in Chapel Hill.

Once mighty now struggle

St. John’s 93-78 win over Duke on Sunday was an uplifting event for a former national power that has lost a lot of steam. The Red Storm hardly is an isolated case on that front.
