Saturday's Rally For A Cure golf tournament benefts breast cancer research

Golfers take up their clubs Saturday in support of breast cancer
research during the Rally For A Cure At Lochmere benefit golf
tournament at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary. 

The tournament is
part of the nationwide network of golf events that started in 1996 in
support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Proceeds from
Saturday's event support the Susan G. Komen Foundation Triangle
Chapter. 

Shotgun starts are at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., leaving plenty
of time for golfers to attend the Spring Daze festival in at Bond Park
in Cary and to play a round at Lochmere.

There's a new date for this year's meal-bagging event for Stop Hunger Now.

Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon highlights a busy weekend for Triangle runners

From Virginia Beach and Philadelphia to Los Angeles and San Diego,
there's the 14-city Rock 'N' Roll Marathon Series combining music and
running.

Raleigh takes off on its own with its version of running and rocking with Saturday's Bank of America Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon, the longest event of a full weekend of benefit race opportunities for Triangle runners. (A list is below.)

The 13-mile course for the 8 a.m. half marathon starts and ends at the
Bank of America building on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh.

RailHawks-CASL Haiti benefit soccer clinic postponed

Wet weather has forced the postponement of Saturday's Carolina RailHawks-CASL fundraising soccer clinic at WakeMed Soccer Park.

A new date will be announced.

The
RailHawks professional soccer club and the Capital Area Soccer League
announced last week they would hold a joint soccer clinic and donate
proceeds to the Haiti earthquake relief effort.

 

 

Registration opens for Nov. 7 City of Oaks Marathon and Rex Healthcare Half Marathon

Runners, it's time to mark your calendars and reserve your place at the start.

Registration has opened for Raleigh's fourth annual City of Oaks Marathon and Rex Healthcare Half Marathon, presented by Raleigh Running Outfitters.

The 26.2-mile marathon and 13.1-mile half marathon will start and
finish on N.C. State University's Centennial Campus on Nov. 7. The
races start at 7 a.m.

Canned art to aid the hungry

Canstruction teams in the Triangle are collecting donations and have dedicated their engineering tech-fu to designing their can-tastic sculptures.

Durham schools fill 'Barrels of Love'

Durham schoolchildren have again begun their annual tradition of filling "Barrels of Love" with food for the Salvation Army's pantry.

Each school in Durham has collection barrels for nonperishable foods. Some are holding competitions for the most food collected, too.

“Every year, this drive is one of the biggest sources of nonperishable foods for our pantry,” said Debbie Avolin, director of social services for The Salvation Army, in a press release. “Durham’s young people work really hard to collect tons of canned goods for people in need.”

Cary Sunset 7000 seeks runners, Food Bank contributions

We can all use free stuff these days, and that includes free entry into
a running event that is part of the Sept. 19 Celebrate Cary at Sunset
festival.

Triangle runners can have their entry fees waived for the Cary Sunset
7000 at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. The 4 p.m. race is a
7,000-yard - 1.25-mile - run, jog or walk around Symphony Lake.

Instead of paying the $15 entry fee, runners may make a donation of
food to the Food Bank of North Carolina at the Food Bank's booth during
the coinciding Celebrate Cary at Sunset Festival. A minimum donation of
$5 to $10 worth of food is required, but runners are welcome to contribute
more.

Kohl's Cares for Kids toys are back

For those of you who look forward to the new Kohl's Cares for Kids offerings each year, here's a look at the 2009 selection.

This year, Kohl's has selected three books and three stuffed animals to go with them. All six items are in stores now and will be available through September.

Each toy and book costs $5, with proceeds going to the Kohl's Cares for Kids program for health and education initiatives. Over the years, Kohl's has made more than $126 million through the sale of these items.
