After being announced as ACC men's golf co-player of the year, the awards keep on coming for Green Hope alumnus Ben Kohles.
Alumni News: Kohles named co-ACC player of the year
Submitted by jmikeblake on 05/05/2010 - 11:47The ACC just named University of Virginia sophomore Ben Kohles co-conference player of the year. Kohles is a 2008 graduate of Green Hope High School.
At Green Hope, Kohles was a part of the 2006 and 2007 4-A state championship teams and was 2008 Tri-Eight Conference player of the year. He is the first ACC co-player of the year since 1997.
Also on the all-conference list is Wake Forest's Lee Bedford. Bedford is a Cary Christian alum.
While at Cary Christian, Bedford was named to the all-state team four times, including three top-five finishes at the NCISAA state championship. He won the NCISAA championship as an individual in 2006 and helped the Knights win the team championship in 2008.
Kohles wins Carolinas Amateur
Submitted by timcandon on 07/13/2008 - 19:57Cary's Ben Kohles beat Mt. Airy's Kyle Wilson 3 and 2 Sunday to win the 94th CGA Carolinas Amateur championship at Wilmington's Cape Fear Country Club.
Kohles, who graduated from Green Hope High last month, evened the match at the turn after Wilson led early 2-up. Kohles won the 10th, 12th and 14th holes before closing out the match when he and Wilson halved the 16th.
In the morning semifinals, Kohles defeated Scott Harvey of Greensboro 4 and 3.
Due to inclement weather earlier in the week, the championship match was shortened from 36 holes to 18 to accomadate a Sunday finish.
Kohles, who will play at the University of Virginia next year, had a strong tournament from start to finish. He shot a five-under 67 in the first round of stroke play and was in second place. He shot one-over 73 in the second round and finished tied for sixth to earn a spot in match play. In the round of 32, he beat Charlotte's John Ebert 2 and 1. In the round of 16, he beat Green Hope teammate Michael Marshburn 4 and 2. In the quarterfinals, he eliminated Josh Gallman, of Gaffney, S.C., 2 and 1.
