Local barista Michael Harwood wins regional competition

Michael Harwood (pictured above) may be the man making your doppio macchiato at Caffe Driade in Chapel Hill. Well, he also is a barista champion.
Earlier this month, Harwood, 28, of Carrboro won the 2011 Southeast Regional Barista Championship in Atlanta. The contest is organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Harwood will progress to the U.S. Barista Competition in Houston on April 28-May 1. He will be competing for the opportunity to represent the United States in the World Barista Competition in Bogota, Columbia on June 2-5.
