Greg Cox's Hot List: Smoky flavors

There's something about those wisps of smoke rising from chimneys on a cold night that trigger a yearning for barbecue. You can satisfy that craving at these area eateries, whose offerings cover the smoky spectrum from Eastern Carolina chopped pork to Texas brisket.

Reminder: Cuegrass Festival is tomorrow

The 2nd annual North Carolina Cuegrass Festival will be 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

The Pit closes down the streets around its restaurant. People bring their lawn chairs to hear live music. (Southern Culture on the Skids is the headliningg act, as well as Old Habits, Jackass Flats and Sons of Ralph Duo.) Plus, you get to chow down on Ed Mitchell's barbecue and drink North Carolina beers, including LoneRider and Big Boss.

Pray for warm, clear weather.

More musicians rocking to Carolina 'cue

Turns out U2 aren't the only fans of Carolina barbecue. Check out this post by N & O music critic David Menconi on his On the Beat blog.

BBQ: Eastern v. Western

This is a guest post from Dan Levine, aka Porky Leswine, the author of the BBQJew blog:

"People who would put ketchup in the sauce they feed to innocent
children are capable of most anything... [W]e, the Eastern North
Carolina purveyors of pure barbecue, will not be roadkill for our
western kin." - Former N&O columnist Dennis Rogers reflecting on a
legislative proposal to make Lexington's Barbecue Festival the state's
official celebration of BBQ (see more here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/22/AR2005052200866.html).

Deadline nears for BBQ sauce contest

Oct. 24 is the deadline to enter NCBBQ.com's  second annual "Pit Master's Choice Awards: North Carolina's State Sauce Competition." Any North Carolina resident can enter.

The contest will be Nov. 7 at Raleigh's Ray Price Harley-Davidson in conjunction with the dealership's annual barbecue cookoff and blood drive.

The competition has two divisions: amateur and professional. Then you can enter a sauce in the Eastern style, Western style and non-traditional categories.

The judges include N.C. barbecue expert Bob Garner, food critic J. Scott Wilson, sanctioned barbecue competition judge Jerry Snead, Wake Tech chef-instructor Fredi Morf and Ned Perry, we assume an experienced barbecue eater since he represents "the voice of the people."

For all the details and an entry form, here is the Web site.
