Live-blogging the 2011 Golden Globes

I'll be live-blogging the Golden Globe action tonight, beginning around 8pm. Just keep checking this link for updates.

Host Ricky Gervais has promised that after tonight, the Globes will not invite him back. How can you resist that?

If you're in to the designer clothes and Red Carpet stuff (best Red Carpet show is on E!), you might as well know I'm wearing flannel pj pants from the Gap and a Northface sweatshirt. I picked it out myself. No stylist here. I'm also taking a lot of cold medicine so if I type something inappropriate, that's my defense.

Golden Globes nominations are controversial as always

If at some point today you sense the weight of indignation and outrage pressing down on you, it's coming from the Twitterverse and it's over the Golden Globe Best Actress nomination of  Piper Perabo (right).

You read that right. Piper Perabo was nominated for a Golden Globe for USA's lightweight drama "Covert Affairs." Over Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights"). Over Glenn Close ("Damages"). Over Melissa Leo and Khandi Alexander ("Treme").

It's hardly surprising, really. The awards folks are always a little bit screwy in some categories and fans and critics are always a little bit angry over the nominations. In addition to Perabo, other targets of outrage today are the nomination of Scott Caan ("Hawaii Five-0"), too much love for "Glee" (specifically Matthew Morrison), and the omission of "Name Your Favorite Show." (I'll name mine: "Terriers," "Justified," "Friday Night Lights" -- no nominations for any.)

Click below for the full list of Television nominees. If you're ticked off (or pleased), tell us in the comments. The Golden Globes will be presented on January 16 and hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Talecris CEO Stern wins entrepreneur award

Executives from several Triangle companies flew to Palm Springs, Calif., last weekend for Ernst & Young's national entrepreneur of the year awards ceremony. Only one came home a winner.

Talecris Biotherapeutics CEO Lawrence Stern won in the Health Sciences category. Stern has run the Research Triangle Park company, which makes medicines from blood plasma, since it was part of Bayer in 2003.

He was recognized for "growing Talecris into one of the leading plasma therapeutics companies in the world," Ernst & Young officials wrote in a prepared statement.

2010 Wine Spectator Awards

Let's raise a glass to this year's winners of the Wine Spectator awards. And no, that's not a typo: The Players' Retreat, long known as a burgers 'n' brews joint, has been polishing its act of late and is indeed a newcomer to the list. If you haven't been there in a while, you may want to drop in and check out the changes.

In the no-surprise category, The Angus Barn does us proud again, bringing home the coveted Grand Award for the umpteenth time in a row (the first was in 1989, if you're counting).

Here are the winners:

Triangle executives win big in Charlotte

Triangle executives dominated an awards ceremony for Carolinas' entrepreneurs in Charlotte on Thursday night.

Of the nine winners, six were CEOs of fast-growing companies based in this area. The annual Ernst & Young awards give corporate leaders bragging rights with their peers, but also can help their companies attract customers and investors.

The local winners included Jud Bowman, CEO of Durham's PocketGear; Leah Brown, CEO of Cary's A10 Clinical Solutions; Craig Collard, CEO of Cary's Cornerstone Therapeutics; Lawrence Stern, CEO of Research Triangle Park's Talecris Biotherapeutics; Chuck Swoboda, CEO of Durham's Cree; and Stephen Wiehe of Cary's SciQuest.

TV Land Awards honor "Charlie's Angels," "Raymond," "Glee"

The 8th annual TV Land Awards show tonight will honor the contributions of comedy legends Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, as well as classic shows "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Charlie's Angels."

Tim Allen ("Home Improvement") is the host, and there's a tribute to Farrah Fawcett, who passed away last summer. I would assume John Forsythe, who died earlier this month, will be getting a little love too.

Also on tap: A "Bosom Buddies" reunion with Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari . . .

Raleigh's Michael C. Hall wins Golden Globe for "Dexter"

The fact that the "Golden Globes" aired on NBC didn't dissuade a little friendly network-bashing over the whole "Tonight Show" fiasco. But all things considered, it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. Tina Fey was perhaps funniest on the Red Carpet minutes before the official show began, proclaiming that it wasn't actually raining in Hollywood, it was God crying for NBC.

Best moment of the night: Raleigh native Michael C. Hall (left) winning the Best Actor award for his role on Showtime's "Dexter." Votes were cast before Hall announced last week that he has Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

I was lukewarm on Ricky Gervais as host. I love him and think he's hilarious in everything he does. So, I had unreasonably high expectations, and he wasn't as funny as Golden Globes host as I thought he'd be.

Guess the Golden Globes winners and get movie passes

Our buddies over at Triangle.com have put together a neat Golden Globes contest, and the person getting the most correct answers wins four movie passes. You have to enter by 6pm on Sunday.

We're sure WarmTV readers will be best at picking TV winners, but there's also a separate contest for picking the winners in the Film categories. Try 'em both!

The Golden Globes Awards show airs Sunday night at 8pm on NBC.
