Everything you need for Oscar night

Tonight's Academy Awards show, hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, begins at 8:30pm on ABC. It will go on forever, so have a cup of coffee or a Dr. Pepper or whatever, and forget about getting to bed at a reasonable hour.

Red Carpet arrivals begin at 6pm on E! and TV Guide Network (or you can start as early as 2pm if you want to do the whole "Countdown to Red Carpet" hoopla). ABC's Red Carpet show begins at 7pm.

Happiness is a Warm TV will be live-tweeting the show (and some of the Red Carpet arrivals) from @WarmTV. If you don't follow us, you should!

The morning after the Globes: Hollywood got its feelings hurt

What a difference a day makes. Last night as I was recapping the Golden Globes and following comments by TV critics and entertainment writers on Twitter, it was clear that I wasn't the only one who thought host Ricky Gervais was funny. There were guffaws over the jabs at Cher, Charlie Sheen, Hugh Hefner, and praise for Gervais for not being afraid to go for the jugular a little.

This morning, in the middle of a Golden Globe hangover of sorts, the world is a little more cranky. My Twitter feed (which also includes some Hollywood types -- actors, directors, screenwriters) is about 50/50 between "Gervais is a lazy jerk" and "Gervais is brilliant!" Even the media seems to be more critical of the British comic. One of the first headlines I saw this morning was this one, from the Washington Post: "'Glee' and 'Boardwalk' soar while Gervais crashes at Golden Globes."

"Crashes?" Really? The writer described his performance as a "meltdown."

Betty White receives Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award tonight

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles will air the 2010 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards tonight on the TV Guide Network. This is the first time the Britannia Awards show has ever been aired on U.S. television.

Betty White (shown here with the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award) will be presented with the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy and Jeff Bridges will receive the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film. Also receiving honors, Michael Sheen will get the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year, and Scott Free Productions will be honored with the Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment.

Actor and writer Stephen Fry is the host and presenters include Jane Lynch, Jerry Bruckheimer, Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, Rosario Dawson, Dakota Fanning, Jane Leeves, Kevin Spacey, Carey Mulligan, Cillian Murphy, and Olivia Wilde.

The show begins at 8pm, with a Red Carpet special at 7:30pm -- all on the TV Guide Network.

More about BAFTA.

What to Watch on Sunday: Country Music Awards and the end of Life

Academy of Country Music Awards (8pm, CBS) - Reba McEntire hosts from Las Vegas. Performers include Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, and more. Plus, you'll see the last performance of Brooks & Dunn. Lady Antebellum (left) leads nominations with seven.

SAG Awards: Raleigh's Michael C. Hall a big winner again

It was another big night for TV stars at last night's SAG Awards, and a lot of Warm TV favorites took home bronzed naked men (those would be SAG trophies), including Raleigh's Michael C. Hall.

For the most part, the SAGs mimicked the Golden Globe awards given out last Sunday night. Alec Baldwin once again won for Outstanding Male Actor in a Comedy for his role on NBC's "30 Rock," and his costar Tina Fey took home the trophy for Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy. (Baldwin the won Golden Globe last week, but Fey lost out to Toni Collette.)

What to Watch on Saturday: From Betty White to Lionel Richie

Screen Actors Guild Awards (8pm, TBS) - Shoved onto cable on a
Saturday night, the SAG awards get no love from the networks, but it's
still one of my favorites. Presenters include George Clooney, Meryl
Streep
, Alec Baldwin, and Jane Lynch. Sandra Bullock will present the Life Achievement Award to Betty White.

The Pregnancy Pact (9pm, Lifetime) -  A blogger investigates a rash of teen pregnancies at her old high school, and rumors swirl about a pregnancy pact between girls.

The Deep End (9pm, ABC) - If you missed the premiere of ABC's new legal drama on Thursday (think of it as a "Grey's Anatomy" with lawyers), you can catch the repeat tonight.

Evening of Stars (Midnight, WGN) - The 31st Annual UNCF fundraiser pays tribute to Lionel Richie (Yes, I had that album on the right and wore it slap out. Truly.). Performers on the show include Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Akon, Ledisi, Jessie McCartney, James Ingram, Brian McKnight, Boney James, and Katharine McPhee. "Evening of Stars" repeats on BET Sunday night at 10pm.

"People's Choice Awards" TV winners

I don't put a lot of stock in the "People's Choice Awards," but it's still worth noting the winners from last night's show.

"Glee" won Favorite New Comedy and "Vampire Diaries" won Favorite New Drama. "House" was also a big winner, snatching both Favorite TV Drama and Favorite TV Actor in a Drama for Hugh Laurie.

Trends from Oscar's red carpet

My favorite part about last night's red carpet -- and many of the red carpets in the weeks leading up to last night -- was the understated elegance going on. A nod to the troubled economy? Likely.

The big jaw-dropping jewels were, for the most part (I'm still wondering if Angelina Jolie's emerald earrings were the real deal), left at home. Instead, the stars focused on adding umph to their best features with their gowns.

A perfect example? Meryl Streep in that off-the-shoulder gray dress by Alberta Ferretti. No fuss or fancy color (not Meryl's style). Just pure and simple elegance.

For the most part, the dresses did the talking rather than all the accessories. Like the big fluffy Christian Dior ball gown Sarah Jessica Parker wore (and nearly fell out of). Or the red architectural gem by Roland Mouret that Heidi Klum wore. That thigh-high slit said it all.

Other continuing trends: the one-shoulder look (Marisa Tomei and Kate Winslet) and belted ball gowns (SJP and Miley Cyrus' dresses).

A more recent trend, however, is the pale dress, which almost seems to have taken off ever since Michelle Obama wore a white gown to the Inaugural balls last month. Anne Hathaway, Melissa George, Evan Rachel Wood (Raleigh girl who was less goth and more elegance last night in an Elie Saab strapless gown that showed off her tattoos) and Marisa Tomei all went light.

If I had to pick a favorite "wow" moment from last night, it came from Meryl, followed closely by Angelina arriving and turning around to show off her enviable cascading dark locks.

Mickey Rourke ... all dressed up to win

Not every guy can dress like George Clooney at the Oscars ...

At least he's wearing a suit, right?

Next year: a tie.

Beyonce's new home decor line?

I'm just thankful that Beyonce had the good sense to keep her jewelry box firmly shut tonight. I don't think we could have handled much more from this look.

Would it have been more bearable as a straight gown rather than a mermaid shape?

Without the big print?

Maybe just in all black?
