Trade in your old CDs for an Amazon gift card

Here's a new option for turning your clutter into cash.

Amazon.com is now offering to buy your old CDs.

Cheaper Nook Tablet aimed at Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire has been a successful device for Amazon, but Barnes & Noble  may be looking to disrupt that with a new lower-cost version of the Nook Tablet.

The current 16GB Nook Tablet is priced $50 over the $199 8GB Kindle Fire. According to The Verge, Barnes & Noble is releasing a cheaper 8GB version of its Android tablet to compete more directly with the Fire.

The Verge's source indicates the new tablet could launch as early as Wednesday.

Does B&N have to undercut the Kindle Fire's price to draw consumers?

Amazon offers cheap subscription to coupon-laden magazine

For $1 a month, you can subscribe to All You magazine right now, using a special deal on Amazon.com.

Since the magazine is typically loaded with 30 to 40 coupons in a single issue, use just one or two coupons per month and it's like getting the magazine free.

WalMart offers deal on Kindle Fire

WalMart is offering the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet this week with a gift card incentive that essentially shaves $50 off the price.

On the front page of today's WalMart circular, the full-color 7-inch tablet is advertised at the regular price of $199, but it's bundled with a $50 WalMart gift card.

One of the hottest gifts of the 2011 holiday season, the Kindle Fire still sells for $199 on Amazon.com and other major retailers.

I'm wondering just how many Kindle Fires each WalMart store will have in stock. If you're interested, I wouldn't procrastinate.

Amazon Fire: No iPad killer, maybe a Nook Color killer

iPad killer headlines get readers, but let's get this out of the way first thing. Amazon's $199 Fire tablet is hardly comparable to the iPad, and this a good thing.

We shouldn't want an iPad clone with support that mimics Apple unless someone figures out how to beat Apple at the game it created

The Fire will appeal to a different market. It is the Nook Color's niche. While the Fire's dual-core processor looks to trump its rival tablet from Barnes & Noble, remember that refreshed Nook Color is due. Part of the success of the Nook Color is credited to its popularity with advanced users who load versions of Android that free the tablet from Barnes & Noble's playpen. If the Nook Color's successor closes that accessibility, it could make it vulnerable to an Amazon attack.

What to like, not to like:

+ Stripped down to the essentials allows for a modest $199 price.
+ Smaller size may appeal to some.
+ Amazon integration should offer seamless experience with its media content.

- $199 price means modest storage, no SD card slot, no camera or Bluetooth.
- Smaller screen size may be a turn off for some.
- Amazon's ecosystem means 10,000 apps instead of 200,000 and a cloudy future for Android updates.

New Nook Color 2 may launch before Amazon tablets

Book retailer Barnes & Noble is reportedly updating its Nook Color tablet crucially ahead of rival Amazon's anticipated tablets.

Digitimes reports that shipments from parts suppliers indicate a September launch for the 7 inch tablet. Amazon is expected to launch two tablets starting as early as October.

The current Nook Color straddles the line an e-reader with tablet abilities, but is highly regarded as a best buy among Android tablet enthusiasts who enjoy the device for its ease of rooting to transform it into a full blown Android tablet.

The impending release a Nook Color 2 could bring discounts for the current tablet.

Boycott aimed at Amazon over sales tax fight

Online retailer Amazon has fought hard against sales tax laws and pressure from states from California to North Carolina. Now a group of nonprofits is joining states' efforts the Seattle-based company.

Amazon goes local with a daily deal

Amazon.com, the behemoth online retailer, is getting into the local daily deals business.

It launched this week in the Raleigh area, the ninth city where it is offering local deals on everything from restaurants to spas and events. The average savings, AmazonLocal said, is 60 percent off regular prices.

Click here to check out the Raleigh site, which launched Thursday with a golfing deal at  Keith Hills Golf Club. Today’s deal is $50 for $100 towards Sapphire Teeth Whitening at Sloop Dentistry.

Amazon is counting on its name recognition and customer base to succeed in the daily deal industry, which has exploded since the introduction of Groupon in late 2008.

Watching TV without cable or satellite

If you haven't seen it already, I have a piece in today's Connect section on different ways to watch TV without cable or satellite. I compare the pros and cons of options like Netflix and Hulu and iTunes and Amazon Instant, but the list isn't intended to be all inclusive. There are probably dozens of ways to pull this off (feel free to discuss in the comments). I just picked out some of the most popular sources and focused on how you might watch cable shows (like "Breaking Bad" or "Mad Men" or "White Collar") if you don't have cable or satellite. I'm aware there are some free options out there that aren't exactly legal. And I'm aware that you can just plug in your TV and watch and record over-the-air broadcast shows without anything special.

Er, except maybe a better TV antenna.

Speaking of antennas, there are lots of them out there and apparently you can even build your own. But if you're interested in the Mohu Leaf antenna I mentioned, you can check out the Raleigh company's website or contact them online or by phone (919) 896-7696.
