Scotty 'really nervous' about singing anthem tonight

Scotty McCreery has already won "American Idol" and debuted with the No. 1 album in the nation. Tonight, the lifelong baseball fan will have another dream fulfilled — he'll be singing the National Anthem before the first game of the World Series.

Scotty got a little practice earlier this month when he sang the National Anthem before N.C. State's home football game against Central Michigan. (See a photo gallery of that performance here.)

But in an interview this morning from St. Louis, Scotty said he's still "really nervous" because this is such a big stage to be singing on. He said his mother, Judy McCreery, has been having him write and rewrite the words to the song so he doesn't forget them.

He's also drinking a lot of warm tea today to get his voice ready. (It's cold and rainy in St. Louis this morning, he reports.)

Tudor: Young Yaz, Vandy a test for Heels’ hurling

Hot North Carolina pitching will face equally hot Vanderbilt hitting in the opening College World Series game for the two teams this weekend.

The Tar Heels (50-14) have been led by pitchers Patrick Johnson (13-1) and Kent Emanuel (8-1) through Regional and Super Regional play.

Free baseball skills clinic planned for seventh-graders

Is another Josh Hamilton waiting to emerge from the Triangle's baseball ranks?

He might get some help from an Eastern North Carolina baseball family.

On Jan. 8, the Narron family and friends will conduct a free skills clinic for players in the seventh grade.

"Glee" cast sings National Anthem at World Series

The cast of Fox's new hit show "Glee" sang the National Anthem before Game 3 of the World Series Saturday night in Philadelphia.

Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes Jones on the show, sang lead vocals while the rest of New Directions group sang backup. No mash-ups, no dancing.

"Glee" is pre-empted for a while due to World Series games on Fox, and will return November 11.

Watch a video of the performance below.

World Series vs. Penn State-Ohio State

The challenge came from one of our columnists, Caulton Tudor, who was betting, without any actual exchange of money, that if the Penn State-Ohio State college football game Saturday night on ABC didn't beat Game 3 of the World Series between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay in the Nielsen Ratings, "it'll be close."

Actually, Penn State's 13-6 victory drew a 6.4 rating to Game 3's 6-1, or about 7.35 million households to almost 7 million, according to Nielsen's weekly broadcast network ranking for the period of Oct. 20-26. Rain, however, prevented Game 3 from starting until almost 10 p.m. The Penn State-Ohio State game started just after 8 p.m.

Game 4 on Sunday drew a 9.3, Game 1 a 9.2 and Game 2 an 8.1.

And "Dancing With The Stars" on ABC trumped every other telecast with a 12.0.
